Nicolas (amanico) initiates a compelling discussion around the Panerai PAM 217 Marina Militare, sharing a striking photo and reflecting on his past ownership. His post serves as a catalyst for fellow collectors to weigh in on this distinctive reference, exploring its unique appeal and the often-complex relationship collectors have with their watches. This thread delves into the nuances of collecting, highlighting how personal preferences and evolving tastes shape a collector's journey.

The PAM00217 represents Panerai's Luminor 1950 Left Hand configuration, distinguished by its destro crown placement designed for left-wrist wear. This reference occupies a specialized position within the Luminor 1950 series, catering to collectors seeking the practical advantages of left-handed crown operation.
The watch features a 47mm steel case paired with a black dial. The substantial case diameter reflects Panerai's characteristic sizing approach within the Luminor 1950 family. The steel construction provides durability while the black dial offers high contrast legibility.
This reference appeals to collectors who prioritize functional design considerations, particularly those who prefer crown operation with the right hand. The left-handed configuration represents a niche segment within Panerai's offerings, making the PAM00217 notable for collectors seeking alternatives to traditional crown placement. The 47mm case size targets enthusiasts comfortable with larger watch proportions.
in my mind. I've looked for it, I've bought it and I've never.....liked it. It has been the first 47mm I've re-sold and I've never looked back on, nor regretted the decision. I didn't sell it "for the money", I did it because I didn't like it nor used it. I found the dial askew and asymmetrical, compared to that of the 127. Completery the opposite, my feeling towards the "brother" 127, which I've always loved unconditionally. Go figure
Sold them. Then I aquired a 422 and had it for years. One day, I foolishly decided that I wanted something simpler. What a mistake, after buying a couuple more PAMs I am now back to owning and wearing my 422 and lovng it even more this time. Don't feel bad about liking, and then disliking a certain watch. It's all a part of this hobby that evolves over time.
Given the camo background the author could be Lapo Elkann ππ
I still have a couple, laying around. I don't mind the desto's configuration, just the 217 vs the 127, that's all
Great shot by the way dear Nicolas. Abrazos, Abel
But recently Panerai launched the Pam 1697 which I feel deserves to be seen in the metal. (I own several Subs in 44 and 44 mm cases which I like but donΒ΄t have the MM dial. Just standard dials.)
