Nicolas (amanico) revisits the Panerai Mare Nostrum Pre Vendome 5218-301/A, a reference he cherishes for its distinct character, acknowledging it might not possess the 'purity' of other iconic Pre-Vendome models like the Logo or Marina Militare. His personal reflections and accompanying images offer a window into a pivotal era for Panerai, inviting collectors to appreciate the unique allure of this specific chronograph.

The Panerai 5218-301/A, often referred to as a "Pre-Vendome" model, holds a distinct position within the brand's early production. It is recognized as one of the earliest civilian models produced after the brand's re-launch, preceding the acquisition by Vendome (Richemont Group). This reference is notable for its relatively limited production and its design elements that bridge the gap between historical military instruments and modern Panerai aesthetics. It represents a significant step in the brand's transition to a broader market appeal.
This particular reference features a steel case, measuring 44mm in diameter, which houses a hand-wound ETA 2801-2 movement. The watch is fitted with a 1.6mm sapphire crystal, providing clarity and protection to the dial. It offers a water resistance of 50 meters, consistent with its intended use as a robust, everyday timepiece. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 42 hours, a standard duration for movements of this type during its era of production.
For collectors, the 5218-301/A is valued for its place in Panerai's history, representing a period of re-establishment and experimentation. While not as overtly military-inspired as some other Pre-Vendome references like the Logo or Marina Militare, its character and relative rarity make it a sought-after piece. It appeals to those interested in the foundational years of modern Panerai and the evolution of its design language.
So different....looks very cool...love the color on the dial
these old Pre-Vendome Models have a certain charm to them that I really can appreciate!
I owned the later reissue and what a fun watch it was to wear! Another one I think about reacquiring sometimes...
the MN, as you know. Other than the Demi Moore for pure aesthetical reasons, I've never given it a second look.
