Amanico shares a rare encounter with a Pre-Vendome Panerai 5218-202/A Marina Militare in Paris, a piece that challenges his extensive knowledge of vintage Panerai. His post delves into the mystique of these early, unnumbered examples, evoking a sense of nostalgia for the brand's foundational era.

I saw this one in Paris, last week, and I thought I saw everything when it comes to Pre Vendome Panerai...

As for the Pre Vendome Marina Militare, I owned one, a beautiful one " non matching ".

I also saw and was offered a prototype.

And, now, I saw a sterile, without number, other than the reference, I mean.

140 Marina Militare were made in 1993, plus 10 Prototypes.
I read somewhere, I think in an article from the italian Press ( Orologi, if my memory serves me well ) that some came without number, as a pre series.

Obviously this is one of them. Even the papers which come with the watch are not numbered.

Now, as an old Paneristi I am, I have to say it is always a special feeling when you fall on this relatively old stuff. Memory comes back, suddenly, feelings, too.

The picture of the prototype.

A bit of nostalgia...

Best,

Nicolas

About the Panerai PAM00140 - Luminor Marina automatic Ref. PAM140

The PAM140 represents Panerai's Luminor Marina series in a 44mm yellow gold case configuration. This reference distinguishes itself within the Marina lineup through its precious metal construction paired with a carbon dial, creating a contrast between traditional luxury materials and modern dial technology.

The 44mm case is constructed from yellow gold and houses an automatic movement. The carbon dial provides a distinctive textured appearance that differentiates this reference from other dial variations within the Luminor Marina collection. The automatic movement eliminates the need for manual winding in daily wear.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking Panerai's signature case proportions in precious metal form. The combination of yellow gold case construction with carbon dial material positions the PAM140 as a variant that balances traditional luxury watch materials with contemporary dial aesthetics. The 44mm case size maintains the brand's characteristic substantial wrist presence while the automatic movement provides practical everyday functionality.

Panerais were quite expensive for what they were and their crown lever systelm is too fragile, not for me. I don't see myself ever buying one [nt]

At that time, they were priced very fair. 1500 Euros, circa. What it had become, now that's another question. But as for the crown lever, I had more than 30 Panerai...

And I never had an issue with them... Best, Nicolas

A friend of mine just bought himself a non-matching...

from a premiere collector, for a..substantial..amount of money, and rightfully so considering the beauty and history of the piece. This prototype, has a less then prestine tritium hands and dial. Humidity must have gotten to them if you observe attentively Still worth buying (if you're into this type of stuff) but I believe you should be able to keep the...kidney Ciao bello
