Finally received this unusual specimen today 🥳 I have to say that I am very impressed by the overall execution and attention to detail. The watch feels robust and well made. I’ve put it on a 3rd party strap and can already tell that it’s a strap monster 👍🏻

About the Otsuka Lotec No.5 Kai Ref. No.5 Kai

Otsuka Lotec represents the contemporary wave of independent Japanese watchmaking, carving out a distinct identity within the microbrand landscape. The No.5 Kai demonstrates the brand's commitment to accessible mechanical complications, offering skeleton aesthetics typically reserved for haute horlogerie at more approachable price points. This positioning reflects the broader democratization of watchmaking artistry occurring across modern independent manufacturers.

The technical execution centers on an open-worked dial construction that exposes the gear train and escapement mechanism. The industrial aesthetic employs brushed surfaces and visible screws, creating a purposefully raw mechanical appearance. Japanese text appears at various positions around the dial, establishing cultural identity within the design language. The case construction appears robust with a textured bezel treatment, suggesting tool watch influences merged with skeleton watch transparency.

As an independent Japanese manufacturer, Otsuka Lotec occupies the growing segment between established Swiss independents and mass-market skeleton watches. The No.5 Kai targets collectors seeking mechanical interest without the premium associated with traditional independent makers. Market positioning remains contemporary, with collectibility largely dependent on the brand's ability to establish lasting presence within the competitive independent sector. Production numbers and long-term brand trajectory will ultimately determine secondary market performance.

Industrial design at its finest

Katayama-san is taking his brand to a whole new level. I don't know what else is in your collection, but I can tell you that design is an important issue for you. Can you tell us why did you choose those watches? Let's switch to italian, glad to see an italian friend here. Complimenti, scelta eccellente, se ricordo bene sei riusciuto a prenderlo a listino, che è un ottimo traguardo, visto il successo che sta avendo. Il Ressence è un'altra chicca da vero esteta ed amante del design.

Indeed, it brings something different to a crowded space...

...you can have a look at my other posts to see what's in my collection, and you'll notice that design definitely plays a very important part P.S. L'ho acquistato da un rivenditore giapponese, perché è impossibile comprarlo direttamente da Jiro dato che bisogna vivere in Giappone. Il Ressence Type 8 è una meraviglia contemporanea.
