G99 shares his long-awaited acquisition: a white-dialed Omega Speedmaster Automatic Reduced. His post details the journey of finding this specific model, addressing common concerns about its 38mm case size and Caliber 1140 movement, and celebrating the unique aesthetic appeal of a white-dialed chronograph.

i've been nibbling at this piece, then getting diverted, coming back to it and getting diverted, you know how it goes, but i have now bitten the bullet and purchased my long wished for white dialled Speedmaster.

i've wanted a white dialled speedy ever since i first saw the prototype Alaska project in the Moonwatch book, but they are few and far between. when the Alaska came out with its big red case and all the other bits and pieces i disregarded it mainly due to the price. i've seen other white or panda dialled speedmasters, but all so limited and unattainable that they were disregarded. then i found this watch for sale, a speedmaster automatic reduced with white dial.

this model isnt one of the most popular of speedmasters, but that didnt matter to me as the dial was absolutely perfect. a bright white dial including subdials with black bezel and hands and the same lay out as the Moonwatch. on a jet black strap it really brings out the brightness of the dial.

one reason it may have been less popular is that it has a 38mm case instead of 40mm for the handwind. it also has the 46 jewel 1140 calibre (eta auto with chrono module) which some have said is problematic when servicing. i did ask a question about it on the forum a couple of months back and most people said the movement was no problem and has been used in many different watches without issue. i also spoke to my watchmaker who said that he had never had an issue with them.

that made me convinced that this was the watch for me. i'm used to wearing bigger and smaller watches so no issue with the size and the dial is a killer so on thursday i started the transaction and it was delivered today.

my first impressions are really good. it dates from 1995 so it shouldnt be perfect and other than a very minor dint in the bezel it is. the strap it came on was an aftermarket croc, but so long i needed to put more holes in it so i put that and the original tang buckle in the box and put an unpadded jet black shell cordovan on it complete with butterfly deployment clasp. the finished result is great, the dial jumps out at you and is so easy to read compared to any black dial chrono i've ever owned. the size is fine and of course comfort is very good.

i dont understand why there arent more white dialled chronographs instead of silver and black and i'll probably never know the answer, but i'm happy that i've got mine now.

i think i've said enough so i'll just show you some pics taken this morning.

enjoy

And of course you get to wear them when you visit :) You are right, there are a lot of different models. Forgetting the mkII-mk5 which will only confuse things, you have the good old moonwatch, handwind, then you get the auto reduced date that mr b has. Fitted with valjoux 7750. Then theres this model, the auto reduced. Looks exactly like a moonwatch, but is auto with 1140 calibre ( eta movement with chrono module). There are many variations on all of these. The triple date with vj7751, known as
