KMII's quest to conquer Nordkapp, Europe's northernmost point, sparks a fascinating discussion among automotive enthusiasts. Having twice attempted the journey, KMII seeks advice on selecting the ideal vehicle, balancing modern comfort with the engaging challenge of an older car. This article delves into the community's diverse recommendations, offering insights for anyone planning an epic road trip to the Arctic.

Twice I came close to driving to Nordkapp, the Northernmost land point in Europe. And both times it failed for some reason (both alternate road trips turned out to be epic but still). But postponed is certainly not cancelled and it’s still very firmly on the to do list.

And here comes the conundrum, where I am curious to hear opinions / advice - given the speed limits and the fact that they are both policed and that breaking them can be painful (some differences depending on route and therefore country but still) the question is what car to choose.

Something modern will get you there painlessly and in comfort but it’s then most probably (could be wrong) a cruise control journey, without much in terms of driving challenge or indeed fun.

Something older could solve that issue, as slower cars would tend to be driven closer to their limits and hence produce more enjoyment, the question being then more one of reliability (getting there and back being kind of a hygiene factor) and comfort (one’s back not getting any younger πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ).

So open for ideas and comments 🀞🏻

Some things considered so far (all would be acquired for the trip):
- Citroen 2CV (I remember Cazalea did that)
- Peugeot 106 (if a non driven to death one exists)
- Fiat Panda 100hp
- Potentially something old and American with a rumbly V8 and without much handling πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Some questions: -How long? -Alone? -From where to where? -Season? Considering the long route, you could start the tour also from Copenhagen, to avoid β€žboringβ€œ Autobahn roads…

Yes, I did the trip in winter in a 2CV. Luckily we had a Dutch TV channel film crew accompany us, so you can see the conditions if you want a preview. The video link is below. Just pretend there is less snow (we went in February) most of the year. I’m on at 2:30, 6:45, 9:18 and 16:35

And most likely it would be a two person affair - driving that far completely alone is of course doable but more tiring and a tad less fun. As for timing, aiming for about 700-800km a day (given the low speeds), so depending on the route that would give the duration. And in terms of season, open to suggestions - if winter would need to either organize soft compound winter tires here (challenging but doable) or do a tire change (soft compound or studded) when crossing into Sweden (European winter

I guess that's a big part of the reason why I happen to love them so much πŸ˜‰....

Would still think that driving it at a level so dr below its ability would be frustrating - but then again the reason I asked for advice is to get a broader set of opinions πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ™πŸ» Most of my road trips have been to countries where average speeds were higher πŸ˜‰
