The Rolex Bubble Back, reference 1858, represents an early example of Rolex's self-winding waterproof wristwatches. This reference is part of the broader Bubble Back family, characterized by its distinctive domed case back designed to accommodate the thicker automatic movement of the era. It showcases Rolex's foundational efforts in developing robust and reliable automatic timepieces for everyday wear, laying groundwork for future Oyster Perpetual models.
This particular reference features an 18k white gold case, measuring 38mm in diameter. It is fitted with a sapphire crystal, protecting a silver dial. The watch is powered by an automatic movement, specifically the Boucheron 1858 caliber, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. The fixed bezel and leather strap complete the watch's classic presentation.
For collectors, the reference 1858 holds interest as an early and relatively rare iteration within the Bubble Back series, especially in white gold. Its larger case size for the period also makes it appealing to modern tastes. The presence of a date complication adds to its functionality, distinguishing it from simpler time-only Bubble Back models and highlighting Rolex's early integration of practical features.
Thank you Ken for the amazing post. Hard to imagine that it's been five years already. The Montblanc pieces here are beautiful, but my favorite is still the Villeret Chronograph 1858 Model. Thank you Ken for this post.
Thank you very much dear Ken Always loved to read you reports As for MB it has passed miles in last couple of years range and quality wise When faced with disaster one realizes how small and insignificant we truly are Keep strong my friend Best D
Thanks for this nice pictorial report, Ken. So, The Blue Chronograph seems to have a big impact on our heart, don't you think? Agreed on the Tourbillon Cylindrique Geospheres. I just wish Montblanc find shorter names for their watches! Best, Nicolas
That's damn sure. Having been on this path for long, our "next target" becomes narrower and more specific. Villeret or 1858 series might be it.... Thank you for your kind words. And we will NOT forget those who helped us back then. Thanks, Patrick! Ken
Yup, I am too old to change my style, hahaha. Yup, MB has really, really wonderful watches today. Who is at the helm may have big impact and that is also amazing. Yes, those small fight, or even hurting, killing each other with clear intention is really, really stupid thing. I hear you. We don't have time to deal with those baseless accusation and aggression toward neighbors. We are just watch lovers!
... except that my mother was in the living room with countless debris of the dishes, tableware, and such. I had to look up the catalog so many times to spell the model name correctly!! Thanks, Nico! Hope you enjoy the trip. Ken
