EmilienO, co-founder of Magnin, introduces his brand's inaugural 'Galion Collection,' a project developed with his father. This article delves into EmilienO's vision for a nautical-inspired timepiece that reinterprets Art Deco aesthetics, offering WatchProSite readers an exclusive look at a new independent watchmaking endeavor.

Hello everyone,

Let's me present my own watch project,

I'm Emilien and I'm the co-founder of Magnin.

As a student and watchmaking enthusiast from an early age, I've always been fascinated by the complexity and meticulousness of the mechanisms as well as the timelessness and originality of vintage watches.
Driven by the desire to create from an early age and guided by the 'movement', I'm delighted to be able to share my very first watchmaking project with my father in a sneak preview!

With this collection, we wanted to convey the very essence of the MAGNIN spirit.
A reference to our family history, and to the nautical world with its signature "M" embodying the silhouette of a ship's bow, this very first Galion collection draws its inspiration from the emblematic lines of these ships, a symbol of the inventions of the Renaissance coupled with the DNA of the art deco watch.
We've paid tribute by integrating contemporary design elements to create a singular timepiece.

The brushed-finish 316 L steel case measures 45 mm x 26 mm and is 13.1 mm thick. It comprises 3 distinct parts: a caseback, a middle and a bezel featuring a facetted sapphire crystal reminiscent of the rough profile of a galleon's aft castle.
The caseback, with its polished chrome finish, also features a sapphire crystal revealing the movement.
Each component is linked to the case middle by a system of screws. This choice was inspired by boating, but also to ensure robustness and water-resistance.
In addition, you'll find a half-chromed, half-matt, embossed polished steel crown to make it easier to hold and more effective.

In the Galion collection, you can choose from a range of 3 dial colours: Sand, Jade and Sapphire, with a sunray effect evoking the sun's rays penetrating the surface of the sea. Our dials feature chrome-plated polished baton hour-markers that taper off at the tips to create an effect of depth. To evoke the art deco style and provide contrast, we've chosen to keep the 12 and 6.

The most distinctive feature of this dial is the seconds disc. Representing the progression of the seconds, it features a subtle matt gold tip at each numbering, reminiscent of a compass rose. A quick-correct date window is integrated at 6 o'clock.

To dress up the whole, we have given the watch hands in the "compass" format, a reference marine instrument. There is a central seconds hand. Each hand and the seconds disc have been given a Super luminova BG W9 treatment to give them a blue glow, a reference to the wide open spaces of the ocean.

We chose to attach a brushed 316 L stainless steel bracelet and a simple folding clasp to the watch to emphasise the robustness, harmony, ergonomics and identity of our timepieces.

As for the movement, we selected the Selitta SW100a Swiss automatic calibre to bring our creations to life. Its small size, reliability and performance make it perfectly suited to our specifications. With its 25 jewels, it has a power reserve of 42 hours and beats at 28,000 vib/hour. Its oscillating weight bears our logo.

I hope this presentation and project attracts your attention. I worked on it without counting the hours... Quite funny for a passionate person you might say wink.

For me, combining work and passion is a real pleasure that I'd love to continue in the future.

We look forward to reading your opinions, your criticisms and your ideas....!

I wish you all a wonderful end to the day.

Emilien

Obviously it's a design element but wonder if people will take to it.
