Patrick_y, a dedicated WatchProSite contributor, provides a crucial update on the armed robbery of Heller Jewelers in San Ramon, California. His initial report brought to light the alarming incident, and this follow-up details the significant progress made in apprehending the perpetrators. This article highlights the innovative security measures being deployed in luxury retail and the complexities of the justice system in such high-profile cases.
In March 2023, I broke the unfortunate bad news that Heller Jewelers, a jewelry store that carried Rolex and Cartier products had been robbed in San Ramon, California. An upscale suburban town near San Francisco. Crime in the city of San Francisco is not uncommon, but crime in the suburbs of San Ramon is somewhat uncommon as the town is known to be a safe and family friendly town.
The robbery occurred while the area was full of people and families, many parents with children had to run for cover once they realized what was happening. The thieves brandished multiple weapons and injured at least two employees in the jewelry store. A restaurant and a Williams Sonoma adjacent to the Hellers Jewelers harbored frightened shoppers while the violent robbery was occurring. Shoppers remember hearing shouting, screaming, hammering, glass breaking, and more in what must have been a terrifying and helpless several minutes. Some shoppers still have some trauma from the incident.
Well, I have an update for you. And there is a sliver of good news.
As of right now, there are five suspects in custody. The FBI and other Federal Police agencies had gotten involved with the robbery. The store reported to the police that the robbers had also taken a secret GPS device on accident during the theft. I speculate that this device was hidden in a piece of jewelry or in a watch or hidden inside one of the display pillows that watches and bracelets are common wrapped around. The GPS device helped the police ultimately gather enough evidence which lead them to now have five of the thieves in Federal Custody. It is unusual for Federal Police to get involved in such a case.
I was not aware that there were such usage of secret GPS location devices hidden inside jewelry or their displays. But this is extremely good news that the hidden GPS device did its job, and helped police catch some of the thieves. It would've been likely that the device was damaged, not fully charged, dislodged, or left behind during the robbery. Perhaps stores will use several of these GPS devices to increase the chance that a thief will actually be tracked with the GPS device. Either way, this is an excellent deterrent.
Heller Jewelers is a family run jewelry store that has been in business for decades in the San Francisco Bay Area. Not only is the physical loss of the goods very damaging, increased insurance costs, traumatized employees, long-term injuries, and more all contribute to greater difficulty to do business. While I of course wished this had never happened to Heller Jewelers, I suppose the fact that some of the perpetrators were caught is a sliver of silver lining to a bad situation. On behalf of all of our readers, I wish the best to Heller Jewelers and all the employees and patrons whom were nearby that extremely traumatizing day.
Key Points from the Discussion
The involvement of federal agencies like the FBI in a local jewelry store robbery is unusual and suggests the case has broader implications, potentially due to the scale of the theft or the interstate nature of the criminal activity.
The use of a secret GPS device, hidden within jewelry or display items, proved instrumental in tracking and apprehending the suspects. This technology represents a significant countermeasure against smash-and-grab robberies.
There is speculation that the GPS device might have been concealed within a dummy watch, a display form, or even a genuine watch, as many display pieces are often non-functional or lack complete movements and accompanying documentation.
While the community hopes for lengthy sentences, the actual prison time for grand larceny with a gun enhancement can vary widely, potentially ranging from a few years to decades, depending on jurisdiction and legal representation.
The federal court system operates differently from state courts, and the involvement of federal police can impact legal procedures and potential sentencing outcomes, which some criminal lawyers may not be familiar with.
Some security countermeasures, like hidden GPS devices, should be kept confidential to maintain their effectiveness, while others could be publicized to act as a deterrent to potential thieves.

Hopefully!
They should stay in jail for a very long time. Years, preferably.

Yes! My first time knowing about them too!
Good job insurance companies, the insurance companies are probably requesting this to be done.

Yes! Renzo Piano was the architect!
It is a nice place. Built not only to be a mall, but a community center as well. Hopefully they catch all the thieves. Sounds like they've only caught around half of them.
