In a world where luxury watches are increasingly visible, jiggerly-cool's personal account of "horological harassment" at work resonates deeply. His experience with a boss questioning his choice of a Panerai PAM 655 sparks a vital discussion on workplace etiquette, personal finance, and the perception of luxury timepieces. This article explores how collectors navigate such delicate situations, offering strategies and perspectives from the WatchProSite community.

"Is buying expensive watches how you spend your money?" asked my boss, eyebrow arched, hand gesturing to the Pam 655 on my wrist.  This was after a department meeting, as were walking back to our desks.

There's an adage, one should not wear a watch better than that of one's boss, but I [foolishly?] thought it didn't apply in my case because (1) he doesn't wear any watch; (2) we're in HK, arguably the world's watch capital; and (3) Rolexes, Cartiers and Panerais are regularly seen in the office, albeit in other departments.

Whilst I was speechless, in my mind I was thinking, "how I spend my $ is none of your damn business!"  (I still haven't come up with a snappy reply that won't likely get me in trouble.)

Some have said it's my fault for wearing a nice watch, but isn't that a form of victim shaming (admittedly nowhere nearly as serious as some other types of harassment/assault)?  And maybe it's just me but I don't consider a plain Panerai -- which doesn't even have the crown guard! -- a fancy watch to be worn only on the DL or in secret/on personal time.

Has anyone here taken flak for the watch on their wrist, whether at work or during time off, and how did you respond to it?

Love white dials on Panerais β€” your watch looks great β€” but, no one ever comments on my watches at work or at meetings!

You should have told him that you need a raise so you can buy a few more.

Working a suits, it allow me to be discrete to some degree with my watches at work. Working from home like this year is the perfect solution as I can now wear my PAM to work! But I would not wear them β€œat” work...

I have more chance to get under the radar with my 1815 up down due to its size and white gold color then most of my PAM

Just tell them that

you are a rich kid BEFORE you start your new job (and after you were hired) - then no-one will wonder
