In a delightful reversal of the usual collecting pursuit, cfn shares his recent acquisition of a vintage advertisement specifically to complement his cherished 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL 'Pagoda.' This post highlights the unique joy of curating not just the object itself, but also its historical and aesthetic context, offering a fresh perspective on automotive appreciation.

Most often probably, it is the other way round….but I just had to have this ad to match my 1967 250 SL (Pagoda)

Looking forward to spring and summer. Impatiently.

About the Mercedes-Benz Ref. 250SL

The Mercedes-Benz 250SL, known as the "Pagoda" due to its distinctive hardtop roof, represents a specific iteration within the W113 SL-Class roadster series. Introduced in 1967, it served as an interim model, bridging the gap between the earlier 230SL and the subsequent 280SL. This reference is notable for its enhanced engine displacement compared to its predecessor, offering a balance of performance and refinement that appealed to a discerning clientele seeking a sophisticated open-top touring car.

The 250SL features a monocoque chassis and was powered by a 2.5-liter inline-six engine, designated M129, which was a development of the M127 unit found in the 230SL. This engine was available with either a four-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. The car's design, penned by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, emphasized safety and comfort, with its characteristic concave hardtop providing improved headroom and structural rigidity. The interior was appointed with high-quality materials, reflecting its luxury positioning.

This reference holds a particular appeal for collectors who appreciate its short production run and its unique position in the W113 lineage. It offers a distinct driving experience compared to the 230SL and 280SL, making it a desirable variant for enthusiasts seeking a specific blend of classic Mercedes-Benz engineering and design. Its relative rarity compared to the 280SL also contributes to its collector interest.

Although I believe the R129 is a classic, too in the meantime 😁

Right now, I am dreaming too…of spring and snow=free roads. Just had its rear axle fixed. Should be totally ready for the new season.

For a long time I did not see the post-Pagoda generations as classics. But now, I do see the R107 as one. It has grown a lot on me. The last model in the as…still working on that one.
