In a compelling 'Choose Your Own Adventure' scenario, vitalsigns challenges the community to weigh two distinct non-precious metal timepieces: the Laurent Ferrier Classic Origin Opaline and a modern Patek Philippe. This discussion, originally posted in 2020, remains highly relevant for collectors navigating the luxury watch market, particularly when considering value beyond immediate resale and the nuances of modern watchmaking from both independent and established brands.

A ground rule: you have to buy at retail; you can never sell.

One from Laurent Ferrier, the Classic Origin Opaline. Somewhat (but not very) sporty, 40mm. Nice hand wind movement which fills the case back, even if not as compelling as LF's micro rotor engine. Not a limited edition, but certainly limited production given the scope of LF's operations. Buy to wear and enjoy, unlike perhaps the PP alternative below, many of which will reside in safes worldwide. LF is slightly thicker than the PP, but by no means porcine given the 40 mm case size.

And one from the venerable Patek Philippe. More casual, and also at 40mm, utilizing PP's long-standing cal. 324 full rotor automatic movement, which appears slightly diminutive in the case back. Thinner than the LF. Includes a date function that some will appreciate but that others will argue does damage to the harmony of the dial. Limited to 1,000 pieces, so not truly rare although certainly in very high demand.

Perhaps by my descriptions you can guess which I would choose smile

Here I have zero hesitation: LF all the way! Honestly, I don't get this Patek. While the LF has a lot of charm. [nt]

Agreed, and yet the PP will trade at $20K+ differential immediately on the secondary market, probably more.

...not to drag economics into it too much. But my cynical side is hard to contain.

Weird. The guys over at VC cant believe

That their boring pieces, that look quite similar, dont get that kind of attention.

I know!

Amazing that everyone is so excited by this Patek, and so uninterested in the Fifty-Six. (I'm in the 'neither' camp myself, which I suspect you are as well)
