Jay (Eire) initiates a compelling discussion on the evolving perception of high-end time-only watches, once considered a less exciting option compared to complicated pieces. He explores how independent watchmakers have significantly influenced this shift, normalizing premium valuations for watches that prioritize purity of design and execution over complex functions. His post challenges collectors to reconsider the inherent value and artistry in a meticulously crafted time-only timepiece.

Not everyone is into the higher end of time only watches, and I can’t say I used to be a big fan either.  It always seemed like a waste of watch budget considering one could get a perpetual calendar or a chronograph instead, both of which are far more interesting to look at (on the dial side at least).

In recent years time only has gotten a new spring of life, in large part down to the Indies (which have normalized paying perpetual calendar money or more for a watch without complications).

In the mass market, this one remains one of the kings of time only.  Yes, there are prettier variants available but this one still has its own personality.

of some of the time only watches. I find it even harder to justify, for me personally the prices of the more complicated pieces for which I don't have a need for. I may be a outcast but I have no need for a perpetual calendar, moon phase, or chronograph. Not that I don't like them, because I do. The two complications I can definitely live with would be a world timer and a GMT. I will take a very nice time only, or time/date watch any day and be perfectly happy.

One thing that I've only lately realized is that Patek, VC, and AP do not really play the 'indie' game of super-high-end time only, whereas Lange and Breguet do. Like you, I love chronographs and calendars (especially chronographs) but what I'm loving the most (these days!) is the somewhat paradoxical complicated time only. And this one is a killer example!

Such detail for a time only movement

There is no doubt that this is a work of art. If you try to explain the mechanism of this marvel to a non-watch person, they would be extremely confused.

That’s enough to get the oohs and aahs !
