KIH delivers an exclusive report from A. Lange & Söhne's 'Never Stand Still' dinner in Tokyo, featuring a rare interview with CEO Wilhelm Schmid. This article offers unique insights into Lange's strategic direction, manufacturing expansion, and product philosophy directly from its leadership. KIH's detailed account, complete with scoop images and interview excerpts, provides a valuable window into the brand's commitment to tradition and innovation.

Lange Never Stand Still Dinner event in Tokyo

As promised, I attended the dinner and here is the report.  Luckily, I could have time with Mr. Schmid alone for a while before dinner and could do some interview as well.  Including that and other pics and reports, I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Yes, today is the 8th of October.

1.  Scoop Images! - Before people started showing up....

CEO was training to become a watchmaker?  Actually, Mr. Schmid DOES do these things even at Glashutte from time to time to relax and re-focus.  Wow.  Impressed.

2. Mini Interview...

PPro: Since you because CEO, what have you changed in the organization?

Herr Wilhelm Schmid (WS): The biggest change is that now we are going to expand the manufacturing.  The last 2-3 years were really tough for us and clients who want our products.  We are investing not only in production but also sales - now we have 7 boutiques, soon have 8, and investing in the quality of our points of sales.   So, we think we are now better-balanced in resource allocation by investing where we may have been neglecting.

PPro: What is your principle you have been keeping?

We are living the world of "ambiguity" today, so never doing xyz underestimates the world and the change that comes with it.  But what we DO is that we treat everybody respectfully.  Even in the heated discussion, we treat everybody respectfully and that will never change.  We never say never as the flexibility is important.

PPro: I am sure you meet many clients all the time.  How much do you listen to the clients' needs or wish list?

I meet and listen to A LOT of clients all the time.  Again, the world is full of ambiguity.  Some people want big watches, that is easy.  Some people want small watches.  But at the end of the day, you have to have a balanced collection.  We have product families or lines (1815, Saxonia, Lange 1, Datograph, Zeitwerk).  We structure the product line up so that some of the products in these family can suit you.  We have to see what is the best match of what we can produce, what is the requirement of the market, what our customers expect from us.  Market is pretty international so we need diversification in that anyone hopefully could find in each line something that matches their needs.

PPro: Why Lange 1 Perpetual Tourbillon needed tourbillon?  People are honestly saying and wondering why tourbillon must be in.  It can't even be seen well from the back.

The answer is YES.  The dial is very, very understated, and very high legibility and unmistakeably Lange 1 family.  About the tourbillon that cannot be seen very well - when you spend such amount of money, you don't buy it to show it off to the people, but you use such money for yourself and your appreciation.  There were too little space inside to make the tourbillon more visible from the back.  We had decided that tourbillon would be in to pursue accuracy from the beginning.  We even thought of including fusee-chain, but there was no room for it.

PPro:  There will be significant milestones in coming years - 2014 will be the 20th anniversary of ALS' re-birth and 2015 is the 200th birthday of Adolf Lange.  Any big plans or surprises?

One thing we can say is that we are aware of these days smile.  Weather we are planning for them are big or small is what we will all see smile.

PPro: Thank you for inviting and for answering questions!

And other small question during the dinner...

PPro: Do you still intend to keep doing "assembling twice"?

Yes, of course.  I would like to make it "assembling three times" smile

3. Dinner!

But some guests are still doing engraving experience, as well as trying to find out who engraved her/his watches' balance cocks.

Mr. Schmid on my right...

Mr. Boussemart (ALS Japan new Brand CEO, since October 1) in front of me....

And Akademie spartan teacher Mr. Martin Jonas on my left....  anything going on here?

Very, very delicious menu and they were in fact extremely good.

Opening remark by Mr. Boussemart

Kanpai remark by Mr. Schmid

And a word from the head chef - Mr. Keisuke Matshushima - who is usually in Nice, France (Kei's Passion) but once a month he comes here.  We, LOC, were very lucky.

First dish... (sorry, I forgot to take the appetizer...)

and another first dish....

There are three layers inside for the perpetual module.

Main dish....

and another main dish....

Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst, LE of 30

The dial engrave is as beautiful as the last one - but this time the material of the dial was not as hard as Honey Gold smile

There is something different....

You may be starting to realize the difference between the existing Zeitwerk and this one other than the dial....?

This angle may show a bit better....

Now you see - the outer ring of the display back is just a slope one, not the two step one.

This is Zeitwerk Luminous - see the difference?

Also, the brighes are full of cote de Glashutte....

1. The reason for the difference of the display back cover - Handwerstskunst are all engraved by hands, even the logos, LE numbers or case numbers while standard Lange does it by machine.  Engraver needed more "space" to do that and therefore, the display back ring is straight line slope.

2. The bridges do not have cote de Glashutte - the same reason.  Standard cote de Glashutte stripe are done by machine, but this one was done by the engravers: very small pattern are engraved.

Maybe a bit bigger for my wrist, but looks VERY good.

Dessert (please praise the effort of the restaurant)

These small red and blue and other "thing" depicts the ruby and blued steel head screws, etc...

Never Stand Still!

As always, so perfect that the logo are put on all the windows and looks as if this is one of Lange's facilities.

4. The guests' special watches and wrist shots (another dessert....).

Pocket watch minute repeater....  For Lange, rare one.

And now the sound with video (pardon the surrounding noise, though)

"Normal" 1815 U/D Walter Lange LE in WG?  Let's see...

Yeah, maybe....

But no.....

Special hand engraving on the back of the hinter case - copy from the old painting of Japanese Samurai....

Also, this is what you don't often see Lange 1 (this is Little Lange 1 but sold and owned as a pair).  What an engraving!

There were so many Lange 1 Tourbillon HG...  #1

Now I remember how this wavy pattern was made.... (see my post on Lange Akademie....)

alang.watchprosite.com

Nice couple...

Lange 1 Touribllon HG #2

Mr. Boussemart's....

Lange 1 Tourbillon HG #3

Nice couple #2

Nice couple #3

Peter' wrist shot (engraver - who we met at the Akademie and he is on my post about it - see the link above)

Wow, looks heavy....

Mr. Schmid's.  Of course, the latest offering.

Only one in the world.  Darth with Baguette bezel....

Tokyo boutique LE

They are so perfectionist and these are on the wall to the toilet.....

5. Today's present for everyone.

In just a few hours, they printed the photos (of you and Lange Uhren staff who came from Glashutte) and even autographed on it.  What a perfect gift for us!  Soooo nice.

Very special thanks to:
A. Lange & Sohne and A. Lange & Sohne Japan staff for PERFECT setting.
Restaurant- I for wonderful foods
And Mr. Schmid and all three watchmakers who flew over from Glashutte for this event.

Thank you so much!

The tour goes to several cities (or more).  Please report here if you go one of them....

Best,
Ken

About the A. Lange and Söhne Lange 1 Platinum Ref. 101.035

The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 reference 101.035 is a study in dramatic contrasts: a black dial set within a case of platinum 950, the combination creating what many collectors consider the most striking Lange 1 variant ever produced. The black dial absorbs light where the rhodium-dialed platinum version reflects it, resulting in a timepiece that projects unmistakable presence and gravitas. The applied platinum indices and hands appear to float above the dark surface, and the outsize date window becomes a luminous focal point.

The weight of the platinum case is the first thing one notices upon handling the 101.035. At 38.5mm, it shares dimensions with every other Lange 1 in the 101 family, yet the density of platinum -- roughly 35 percent heavier than gold -- transforms the tactile experience entirely. This physical substance is matched by the caliber L901.0 within, a manually wound movement that stores 72 hours of power and is finished to standards that rival any manufacture on earth. The hand-engraved balance cock, a signature of A. Lange & Söhne, is unique to each individual watch.

Platinum and black has become something of a classic combination in haute horlogerie, but few watches execute it with the authority of the 101.035. There is no wasted space on the dial, no superfluous decoration -- every element serves a purpose and occupies its position with mathematical precision. Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his workshop in Glashuette in 1845 with a vision of building the finest watches in Germany. This reference, in the noblest metal with the most dramatic dial, suggests his descendants and successors have honored that vision completely.

... if i were you, i'd choose one, and "Keep Walking" :) Great post. I suspect a futur lange Zeitwerk in Rg with the same dial texture as the platinum one. Like on the PLM LE's 15pcs that you've post a while ago. That would be a die for piece

It's a great report Ken, the pics and the interviews: both are very interesting to look at/read. I see it's also a recreational way to be able to see many LE in the flesh. I have a question concerning the Zeitwerk display back: is it more comfortable on the wrist that way? I remember when I tried a Pt DS (even the Dato) that is was hurting a bit and I wonder if this smoother ring is not something to keep for other watches. I completly understand what he meant by needing to have watches that matc

Marvelous event... In typical October Tokyo style... Really like the duo of Couple #2. Stunning duo. And truly a great representation of Lange. The dessert looks great, I love chestnuts, the Mont Blanc cake is one of my favorite desserts... Hoping that this event comes to my city... Thanks for pointing out the differences in the Zeitwerks! Good observation!
