Epilogue's detailed observation of Glashütte stripes on an A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 movement offers a fascinating insight into haute horlogerie finishing. His close examination, even under a loupe, reveals the visual depth of these decorative ridges, prompting a deeper appreciation for the meticulous craftsmanship that defines luxury watchmaking. This exploration into the tactile versus visual nature of movement decoration highlights the subtle artistry often overlooked by the casual observer.

Just wanted to share this picture with you. Though I’ve spent many hours observing (even through my loupe) the Lange 1 movement (here from 2000) I never actually noticed how pronounced the ridges were.

Though they are really visible, if well executed, they are not palpable under the human finger. Ie, you shouldn’t be able to feel them when running your finger over them. I had the pleasure of doing this experiment at Christian Lass but this is a story for another time!

Enjoy and happy day!

You can tell it’s just an illusion by the engraved words… they stay flat while the stripes below them seem to rise and fall

Like the contours of a well used canvas, if it were made of German silver.
