nm1213 shares his journey of acquiring and restoring an A. Lange & Söhne Cabaret, a model he believes is significantly underrated. His personal account highlights the emotional connection collectors can form with a timepiece, even one in need of extensive care. The post also serves as a testament to Lange's service capabilities, bringing a vintage piece back to pristine condition.

I'm not sure why the Cabaret isn't more popular.  Saw this one, and instantly fell in love.  It had never been serviced, and was scratched, dinged, dented, the movement discoloured, and was gaining 30 seconds a day.  I still bought it without hesitation, visited the local boutique, and sent it for servicing.

I then went to buy the new saxonia 37, and while it is stunningly beautiful, it just didn't make my heart skip.  I then decided on the Lange 1, but that too was impressive, but I didn't fall in love.  There is just something special to me about the Cabaret.

Eight agonising months later it's back, and absolutely perfect.  My god this thing is beautiful, and the service centre restored everything to new.  The boutique in Singapore also deserves credit for their professionalism, friendliness, and perfect customer service.

Here are some pictures, first by itself, and finally alongside another old favourite... let's see yours.

Putting it side-by-side with a Reverso is such an interesting comparison

Never thought they'd be about the same size and form! One of the magical things about the cabaret is the illusion of how they manage to cram in a bigdate into such a narrow, rectangular case...The shaped movement is also something very unique that you don't find in Lange modern pieces. Maybe they will revive it again someday? Regards, skyeriding

Things that I love...

I find that the Cabaret wears a bit bigger than the Grande Taille, mainly because of a taller dial. I also love that the top case and crystal are slightly convex. Finally the big date is symmetrical, and frankly fits better on the Cabaret than on a Lange 1. I too hope they'll one day resurrect this model, or at least a rectangular shaped watch.

Personally, I think it's a great piece.

Especially the moon phase variant with big date. I love the lines of this watch, and it comes in all the dial variations you'd expect from ALS. Fortunately, they seem readily available on the secondary market...and reasonably priced.

That was worth waiting. It's splendid! At the back of my mind, I think about a Cabaret in white gold and blue dial to give a great friend to my Lange 1. May be one day

Best wishes Alkiro

The used market...

The great thing about buying used is the confidence that Lange is able to restore things back to new. This watch is just about 17 years old, and until now had never been serviced. It wasn't babied either. I can now make my own scratches!
