In Africa, a very large percentage of the safari trucks are Land Cruisers. Mostly because the safari operators have found that the Land Cruisers are much more reliable and economical to run than the Land Rover Defenders. From a capability standpoint, the two models are supposedly equivalent; from a fuel consumption standpoint, the Land Cruiser engine is significantly larger so therefore more powerful but consumes more fuel too; from a maintenance standpoint the Land Cruiser is easier to work on;

Owned 4Runners, Jeeps driven Explorers, Expeditions Hummers etc. 2nd choice Toyota Land Cruiser...1st choice by a whisker...Toyota Tundra...off road package with Hemi option...load a couple of bags of sand and salt over the rear axle and you are unstoppable.
When it comes to utility vehicles looks don’t mean a great deal. My driveway is hundreds of feet straight up like Dracula’s castle. I blew out a brand new 4 runner transmission on it and that truck was the only badass vehicle that made it.
Never a single problem. I'm guessing it was not your driveway that caused the problem.
Ten foot drop. If there is snow you can’t slow down. If you lose traction at the choke point you start to slide towards the ravine. It was there in the snow that the wheels started spinning and the transmission went...very scary. The truck is heavy enough because you can load weight onto the bed. The other problem with the 4 Runner is the undercarriage clearance which is much better with the pick up...
