Ambel shares his deeply personal journey into independent watchmaking with the acquisition of his customized Voutilainen Vingt-8. This post highlights the unique connection and collaborative process collectors experience when working directly with master watchmakers like Kari Voutilainen, a stark contrast to acquiring pieces from larger, more established brands.

Since many years I have great admiration for independants!
Ranging from affordable brands as Stowa, Habring to the all time greats like Voutialinen, RW Smith. I will not mention Dufour as impossible to have.

Until now my collection was broadly attracted to major brands like Rolex, Patek,... and the smaller independants.
In 2016 finally decided to purchase a Voutialinen Vingt 8, but of course personalized.
The entire process was great: I had already the dial color in mind years before y decision=salmon
But then there are endless possibilities: color indexes, color mouvement, type of guilloché,...

The communication with Kari was amazing and truly adds a great personal value to the watch, which you cannot have with big brands.
Am found of all my Rolex and am proud of my 5711, 5710P,... but this is something personal.

Enough talking, here are the pictures.
Sorry for the crappy pictures, watch has just been collected - better pictures to follow by the end of this week.

Stunning! A grail watch for sure...

I was fortunate to meet Kari Voutilainen a few months ago in NYC. Such a friendly and humble man, but his passion for watchmaking is something that can not be explained. It is my dream to own one of his creations at some point in my life. Congratulations. The dial is incredible, and more importantly, you have something that was made by a true legend of the watch world. Chris

Congrats and wear it in good health.

Well done, sir, in your choice of colors. I especially like the red dot markers.
