Dr. Tabby, known as Spangles on WatchProSite, initiates a compelling discussion on the defining characteristics of high-end Japanese watchmaking. His exploration, prompted by Citizen's 'The Citizen' line, seeks to identify a distinct Japanese horological aesthetic, akin to the recognized German style. This article synthesizes community insights to help define the unique 'DNA' of Japanese luxury watches.

Recently I saw that Citizen is beginning to step into higher end watches with its The Citizen line. I love the well polished dauphine hands, strong markers, and use of patterned washi paper. Is This The Japanese Horological Aesthetic?

Like how we could look at a Lange or a Lang & Heyne and say it's in the German style?

What do YOU think? How do you define the Japanese style? And please share your Japanese watches!

I propose strong, legible hands, well finished and matched by the same with markers. The use of or allusion to traditional Japanese materials, finishing techniques, or allusions to the natural beauty of Japan are part of this DNA. In terms of movements, an emphasis on high end manufacture and high performance as the goal.

I see the similarity here but I'm not sure it carries over to all Japanese watches

I have had plenty and I guess you might want to qualify "High-End" does it mean just The Citizen and Credor and Grand Seiko and the few hand-built watches? Minase brand watch Higher-end Seiko with automatic Expensive Kinetic Presage "heritage look" Divers Credor Node and Classic styles Platinum chrono skeleton (ala Chronoswiss) Cazalea

With those photos you made it extremely difficult to define something common for japanese watch. 😊
