Adman7 shares a deeply personal account of evolving tastes in watch collecting, culminating in the acquisition of his first Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. This post explores the journey from a preference for round sports watches to embracing the classic rectangular Reverso, highlighting the brand's blend of heritage and innovation.
I've grown up with sport watches thick, thin, big, small, plastic, steel and cheap to unfortunately not so cheap . . .but it's always been oval and round. Well as we know one cannot study the history of JLC and not bump into the Reverso. I've seen it . . ..I respected it . . . but i just knew it wouldn't be for me. And over time I've continued to collect and wear watches in the same style and evolution . . .modern Panerai evolved to PreV . . .modern Rolex evolved to vintage . . ..and JLC research evolved into the Incursion and DSA. But slowly the ice around the Reverso also began to thaw and I thought . . . hmmmm . . . .could I have been wrong? A business trip several months ago to LA of course led to a stop at OP and JLC to see my favorite enablers, and a few phone calls with a good friend and confidant also followed . . . .and my first Reverso was put on order.

. . . .but in this instance I'd managed to move out a lot of what wasn't seeing the light of day already, so I had a bit of a war chest built up for the right time. Along with my evolving taste into rectangles . . . . I'd also made the leap to . . . . .as I whisper it hushed tones . . . . .gold! I know yellow gold to many conjures up a heavy set gentleman with a pinkie ring at resort in Boca or a cheesy new oil money billionare looking for some bling. But to me it is memories of my grandfather. He world a gold watch his whole life and in my world essentially acted as my father, and it was that watch that first gave me an appreciation of watches as something to value and build a relationship with through life . . .. as well as be something to continue to pass along to the next generation. So I had settled on gold and am at a point I can make it work . . ..or rather could care less about anyone who thinks it doesn't I guess . . .and set about to find the exact watch for me. Fortunately in a few exchanges of emails and calls, this one landed as well. So a bit heavier metal than the rectangle, but quite a tag team arrival for me . . .

Glad you hung on to it ! Its something in the horizon for me as well. It has such warmth and beauty it hard to resist ! The reverso has alot going for it and not everyone can carry it off. It looks excellent on you ! Congrats on the excellent Duo and for sharing your journey ! I love reading this and gives much insights into thought of fellow purists !
I think that's one of the things that comes along with an evolution in one's own style and taste choices . . . . one becomes less concerned about what's on someone else's wrist. I dig that a Reverso now works for me . . .but to each their own and happy for everyone's journey. thx.
I have a similar model Reverso as yours so I can appreciate full well what a pleasure it is to wear that piece, especially with more formal attires and some sharp shoes to go with that refined black leather strap. And although I don't normally like gold Rolex watches, your reasoning leaves no room for debate. It has to be gold in that case. I am worried though about the other "clunkers" sitting in your box. I don't know how many and what pieces they are but let's not get rid of them now. Surely
The analogy definitely translates and I agree. One of my favorite pieces is nothing like these 2 in an horological sense . . .but it's 1 of 10 and amazingly comfortable to wear and got a chance to discuss the evolution of it with the collaborator and I was sold. I won't be unloading the clunkers just yet . . . those tritium dials still sing to me! And the 1 of 10 is the Sinn - Solebox . . .orange baby!
