Nicolas's post, "Black Memovox, a Black Beauty!", delves into the rare and exquisite black-dialed Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Ref. E 855. Highlighting its iconic status, elegant proportions, and intricate design details, Nicolas provides a compelling case for why this vintage piece remains timeless. Readers will appreciate the historical context and aesthetic nuances that make this particular Memovox a collector's gem.
The Memovox E855 is a notable iteration within the Memovox family, recognized for its alarm complication and often associated with designs from the 1970s. This reference represents a period when Jaeger LeCoultre explored various aesthetic expressions for its alarm watches, appealing to collectors interested in the brand's mid-century output. It stands as an example of the Memovox's enduring appeal as a functional and distinctive timepiece.
This reference typically features a case, often in stainless steel, housing an automatic movement. The specific caliber, such as the K825 or 825, is known for its dual-crown system, one for time setting and winding, and the other for setting and winding the alarm function. The case diameter is commonly around 37mm, and it is fitted with a crystal, often acrylic, protecting a dial that frequently includes a rotating inner disc for the alarm setting.
For collectors, the Memovox E855 is valued for its mechanical alarm complication and its place in the lineage of Jaeger LeCoultre's alarm watches. Its variations in dial design and case materials offer diversity for those assembling a collection of Memovox models. The E855 appeals to enthusiasts who appreciate the brand's technical innovations and the distinct character of its alarm timepieces from this era.
This is one good dissertation of an iconic watch. Love these memovox. Alarm is one of the most practical complication and the memovox is almost synonymus with alarm wristwatches. You have never cease to amaze me with your wonderful JLC collection. Your love for this watch is clearly shown in the great condition this 40+ years old watch is in. I have a memovox but it's from the 90's with a display back. Comparing it with the earlier version, I can see where the design lineage comes from. Thanks f
a Black Beauty, indeed! Good luck in adding the missing piece(s) to your collection. And thanks for the education about a very intriguing member of the JLC family. tempusfugit

for sharing this wonderful report of such a beautiful watch with us. A large and instructive work as always, Nicolas. I must say that these vintage Memovoxes are a true reflection of a nice and beautiful use of the basic architectural shapes (circle, square and triangle). Viewed from this "artistic or architectural" point of view, the Memovoxes these are true Works of Art in which it has come together a visual harmony of great size. The circle, "mother" of all the shapes, is a major element visu
what a nice classic design for this great timepiece. I really love the purity of the dial and the Dauphine hands. I don't know if I prefer the silver or the back dial for this watch, they are both amazing. Thanks for the great post ! Cheers Jeff
