Ruckdee, a long-time collector, shares his enduring fascination with moonphase complications, tracing his journey from his first Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Moon in 2005 to his latest acquisition, the Master Ultra Thin Moon 39. His post offers a personal reflection on collecting, the emotional connection to watches, and the difficult decisions sometimes involved in curating a collection. This article explores the evolution of his JLC moonphase collection and the rationale behind his choices.

My confession is this: I can’t seem to have enough moonphase watches. Here's my current stable.

As a college student beginning to understand mechanical watches in 1999, I was fascinated by the look if not the complication of the moonphase display as seen in watches like the Omega Cosmic or the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Caliber 866. I came to know the JLC brand a couple of years later by chance and, after some more years of savings, I chose the Master Moon as my first JLC in 2005.

The Reverso seemed like a natural progression from that point. But the original Sun Moon in rose gold was beyond my reach. The best I could do was the Reverso Grande Sun Moon when it was introduced in 2006 if I am not mistaken.

Then, in 2008, I bought the Atmos Classique Phases de Lune as a housewarming gift for myself.

My most regrettable decision over the years of interest in watches is the sales of my Master Moon in 2010. I felt it was too small and proper for my liking and the way I dress casually. Besides, I needed the money for an engagement ring and the Master Moon presented itself as a viable candidate to be sacrificed. I didn’t think I would miss it this much. But I did. The introduction of the Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 in 2011 was welcomed by me. Everything is perfect, except for the diameter which would have been even better if it was 41 mm instead. My patience was rewarded by the Grande Reverso Calendar in the following year.

Two years on and I still felt like there is a hole in my heart that needed filling. I looked at and tried on all possible choices and kept coming back to a piece I find to be very pure. The trigger was pulled last month and I am now a happy owner of this fine timepiece.

The writing on the background says it all.

I really like how the bezel is slim and the lugs graceful.

The clasp is so well polished that the text can almost be read in the reflection.

While not my favorite self-winding caliber, the movement on the MUT Moon 39 is finished nicely enough for the price paid.

The 1,000 Hours Control logo can be clearly seen in this close-up shot.

My macro lens is effective enough to help me capture the sunray finish of the silverish dial.

Would I be correct to say that the hands are sandblasted? I fail to find a more appropriate word to describe that surface.

But well, I did not give it much thought as the main attraction for me is here. The moonphase disc is so big I had to use a ruler to make sure that my eyes did not deceive me.

The Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 on my wrist … finally!

I like the look of this watch better when my forearm is not naked.

I am a very happy person at this moment. That is until the credit card statement arrives next week sadly. But this acquisition is worth the financial burden. I can now stop thinking about which round moonphase JLC to get and direct my focus squarely on my work and productivity.

Thank you for looking and hope you find my moonphase theme interesting enough smile

Hi I can understand the obsession - all look really elegant and refined. Bothe the Mast Ultra Thin Moon and the Grand reverse Calendar have a lot going for them. I really like the Reverso - really elegant and a lot of appeal - it just feels a tad too large for me, I know I've said this before, but would have been much more tempted if it had been in a GT case. Though not sure if the dial might have been too cluttered then. A question for you - have you never been tempted to get another Master moo

I wanted to say that but could only think of other words like classical or sentimental which don't quite correspond with what I had in mind. Romantic it is, yes, thank you very much for that and also for the compliment. Ruckdee

...question about reacquiring the Master Moon, yes I have tried. Unfortunately, the friend to whom I sold it has already sold it to somebody else by the time I checked with him. I thought also about getting the current Master Calendar. However, I chose the Master Ultra Thin Moon for three reasons: 1) The Master Calendar uses a calendar layout which is too similar to my Grande Reverso Calendar. The MUT Moon offers a dial design I have never had before. 2) Since both the MUT Moon and the Master Ca

The MUT Moon is perhaps one of the most beautiful and comfortable watches out there, with just enough to create the interest but not overdoing it. The legibility, which is paramount to me in any watch is also present - the finishing on each half of the hands reflects light so well and the blued seconds hand just ends a perfect design story. Congratulations on this acquisition. It's a watch that I've enjoyed a lot for a little over a year and definitely one that gets a lot of wrist time. Richard

.....think of it like this.....once, I worked in this very small office where there was just two of us. The other guy was an English Lord. He told me that the ONLY way that he would make money was by spending more than he had.....it forced him to be very productive!!! So....enjoy this new acquisition as it will definitely help improve productivity going forward!!
