Amanico shares a rare encounter with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Hybris Artistica, a unique piece he handled in 2014. His post delves into his fascination with tantalum cases and ruthenium dials, prompting a community discussion on the use of these distinctive materials in high watchmaking.

There are few chances you can see the MGT Gyrotourbillon 3 Hybris Artistica in the real world, as it is a piece unique.

It was a privilege to be able to handle it for a few minutes, in 2014.

Why posting it right now? Simple... I developed an obsession for tantalum cases. And here, the watchmakers at Jaeger Lecoultre did an awesome job.

The combination of a tantalum case with the ruthenium hammered dial is sublime. The dial dedicated to time, in black, adds mystery to Mystery. Another good idea.

Alas, as I said, it is a piece unique, so the changes to see it again is very meager.

BUT a new watch with a tantalum case and a ruthenium dial and / or movement would be an excellent idea.

What do you think?

Best,

Nicolas

The only tantalum watch I've handled is the FPJ CB. I'd love to see more. On this superb JLC, what is the number in the cutout? In this example, "58"? Thanks for posting. M4

from all current catalogues, I think only the CB is in tantalum...will be great to have other brands offering something... this piece is monumental....I guess because of the gyroT, the watch is quite thick...

Tantalum case + ruthenium finishing would be a killing combo... if there was one with a brand I like. Let’s dream and maybe it will happen...

And then, as tastes were changing, I found the CB. It was more than the Panerai in terms of cost, not by much actually as one still traded at a big premium while the CB traded at a reasonably large discount in the second hand market, but I had enough conviction to pull the trigger. Would be nice to see more use of it, aside from the visual it also withstands the day to day grind of being on the wrist pretty well. I don’t believe there is a noticeable mark on my CB.

Tantalum case is killer. Thanks for sharing Nico. Best, David

Perhaps a silly question but what is tantalum and what makes it so special?
