Amanico's captivating images of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Alarm E 857 Europe highlight the enduring appeal of vintage dive watches. His post underscores the watch's minimalist dial design and the unique charm of its 'chocolate' outer dial, inviting collectors to appreciate the subtle details that define horological elegance. This piece serves as a visual testament to why certain vintage references continue to captivate enthusiasts decades after their original release.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox reference E857 is a notable example of the brand's alarm watch production from the mid-20th century. This particular reference is distinguished by its larger case size compared to earlier Memovox models, reflecting a shift in design preferences during its era of production. It maintains the characteristic dual crown configuration, with one crown for time setting and winding, and the other for setting and winding the alarm function.
This reference typically features a stainless steel case, though gold-capped or solid gold variants were also produced. The case diameter measures 37mm, a substantial size for its period. It houses the automatic Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 825, an important development as it was one of the first automatic alarm movements. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 45 hours and is protected by a plexiglass crystal.
The E857 appeals to collectors interested in historically significant alarm watches and the evolution of automatic movements. Its larger dimensions make it a more wearable option for modern tastes compared to some earlier Memovox references. Variants exist with different dial finishes and hour marker styles, offering variety within the reference.
I would love to buy a very good tropic diver strap, like the one shown. What brand is it?
And that sun tan I'd swear you're in Marrakesh!
I don’t know where Nico’s strap from, thinking how he is probably an original from the era? I saw some tropical straps in Atelier Romane, however I never bought anything from them so can not vouch for the quality etc.
This watch is another placative example why vintage always beats modern. This attractive patina can't be replicated or remade. It just has to "happen" by itself as time goes by, like grape juice becoming a fine wine after many years.
and you won't have that issue
And, of course not to forget the watch(es) ! I deem myself lucky to have seen both in the metal, when visiting some time ago, hilarious and great times BTW ! - Have a good upcoming weekend, my dear friend ! Best, hs PS: apologies for my tardy response but had somehow missed the post, when issued ! )
