India Whiskey Charlie's original post on the IWC Portugieser Automatic 40 sparked a lively discussion among collectors, highlighting the significance of case size and design heritage in IWC's iconic Portugieser line. This article delves into the community's initial reactions and expert opinions on how this 40mm iteration measures up against its predecessors and the broader luxury watch market. It's a testament to how a subtle change in dimensions can reignite passion and debate among horology enthusiasts.
I've always loved those time-only Portuguese, but they were always so big! At 40mm I'm going to have to seriously consider this.
"yawn, isn't this an existing model?" Then I noticed the size: a smaller case should make it very appealing - well done IWC! I hope to catch a wrist shot soon
Simple, thin (Piaget movement) and a more manageable diameter. It was of course a little too dressy so it never got worn ! This one is a little more casual with the sub seconds.
Except it's a bit thicker than I'd like a 40 mm watch to be.
...but IWC tends to have two case sizes; hockey puck or tuna can...
The original Portugiesers were thin watches. But they were also manual wound: they have no respect for history ;-) I would have gone all the way and created a new manual wound caliber, with a closed caseback and the old logo on the dial too!!
