Bruno.M1 takes readers on an exclusive road trip through Germany, Switzerland, and France, offering an intimate look into the workshops of independent watchmakers. His detailed account provides a rare glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship and passionate dedication behind brands like Lang & Heyne and Kallinich Claeys. This article highlights why these independent houses continue to captivate collectors with their unique approaches to horology.

This is, in fact, a fascinating story that clearly illustrates what passion truly means. Claeys is trained as a engineer, and after completing his studies he was unfortunately confronted with a medical issue. This forced him to reflect on what he really wanted to do in life. From an early age, he had already developed an interest in watches, and he began asking himself: “Why not do something in the world of watchmaking?”
He enrolled in a watchmaking school, where he certainly learned a great deal, but in his opinion not nearly enough. A subsequent position at Lange & Söhne shaped him even further.
Now, aspiring watchmakers rarely have the budget to invest in extremely expensive CNC machines. Claeys’ solution is nothing short of brilliant. He purchases certain components and, drawing on his engineering background, invents and builds enough himself to create a fully functional CNC machine—entirely self-made.
A simple cabinet serves as the frame, with an oil reservoir at the bottom for the CNC machining process. The oil is filtered using pieces of old, worn-out shirts. The necessary cooling system was built from the cooling components of an older PC. In short, I find it deeply admirable that he designs and builds all of this himself, and that it performs exactly as it should ..without having to spend a fortune.

Thanks for the tour!
I really like the Lang & Heyne watches they really are just stunning and seeing some of what they use to make them makes it more interesting. The Kallinch Claeyes watches and set up really was quite inspiring and shows their passion clearly and it looks like for them necessity is the mother of invention and quite an amazing achievement. If I'm being honest the last watch from Marco Lang is most probably my least favourite but I also have no idea which one I would pick from all of the shown w
A huge thank you for sharing these visits with us. So many things and details to love, here... Best, Emmanuel
like these. Thanks Bruno for documenting your trip to these 3 manufacturers.
IMHO Georg’s bridges are THE benchmark, in terms of design and finishing. These are our favourites pilgrimage destinations
I love KC and met the dynamic duo at DWW 2025. Very impressed with their work.
