Received today from the United Kingdom. Ref. 43999, manufactured in November 1964. It is in unmolested, original condition, as represented by the seller, who is a reputable vintage Seiko guy. Thanks to Quattro, Dr. No and his friend on opining as to originality. It really is the perfect, vintage Grand Seiko. Around 37mm but seems to wear larger, which suits my tastes as I’m usually preferring north of 40mm. Also came with a ‘60’s vintage bracelet. Excited to add this one.

An AI search reflects that the 43999 was a milestone in Seiko’s history:

This iconic “second” Grand Seiko timepiece includes several crucial historical milestones and collectibility factors:
  • The Date & Quickset Feature: By evolving from the original 3180 calibre, the Self-Dater upgraded the 35-jewel Caliber 430 movement and introduced a proprietary quickset date mechanism, greatly improving everyday wearability.
  • The "Grammar of Design": The 43999 features the chiseled, angular 37mm case design that served as the foundational canvas for Taro Tanaka’s famous "Grammar of Design"—a strict design language of sharp, flat facets and Zaratsu polishing.
  • Dial Variations: 43999s are categorized primarily by two dial styles:
    • SD Dial: Features the Special Dial/compass logo, indicating the use of solid 18k white gold or precious metal hour indices.
    • AD Dial: Features a star-shaped emblem indicating rhodium-plated "applique" indices crafted using the elite Shokuji technique.
  • Caseback Insignia: It boasts a prominent gold "Lion" medallion on the solid screw-down caseback, a signature of Grand Seiko's stringent, in-house chronometer standards of the era.

I stand corrected. It is not our SF’s Substack. It is a good one though, called SF Watchlover.
