KMII shares a series of macro photographs of his Grand Seiko SBGH035, offering an intimate look at its details, from the deployant to the blued seconds hand and the 9S85A movement. His post explores the unexpected pleasure of observing movement finishing under magnification, challenging his prior preference for a solid case back.

I am still in the process of getting the hang of macros but here are some early attempts of me trying it with the Grand Seiko SBGH035. I have to say I have started doubting my earlier conviction that the watch would be better with a solid case back - there is lots of fun to be had observing the movement with a macro lens, much more so than with the naked eye. The movement finishing has never been a primary concern of Grand Seiko, I guess but it's still worthwhile having a look. So without further ado...

Starting with the deployant. No safe queen that one, at this magnification one can see some signs of regular desk diving use. Let's call it patina wink

Here a picture of the crown. Very appropriately sized, easy to grasp and truly a joy to wind. In spite of its stated 100m WR, it's not a screw down, which is a real feature in my eyes, since it makes a quick wind on the mornings when I do not intend to wear it much easier. Next time I really need to wipe the watch down before taking macros smile

A look at the wave like pattern of the dial and the date window. I am not a real date fundamentalist and can live with it in this application, although the watch could also do without...

The hands are amongst my favourite features on Grand Seiko watches, and the blued seconds one is the cherry on the cake in this particular case!

No secret about the heritage here wink The movement, being a Special, also has lots of adjustment options. While I have never properly timed it, my amateur attempts of seeing how well it runs show a deviation of just over a second a day (fast).

As said, movement finishing was probably not top of the agenda but it has been performed adequately well for the price level. Compared to less 'Special' GSs, it has some nice touches, too...

...for instance the golden lion on the rotor.

And here it is as a complete product, ready for another day. One of the more versatile, and most useful watches I have. Incites no envy and almost no recognition in Europe, yet I got more positive comments on it from watch savvy friends than on any other watch I have. I guess it slowly needs to get additional company from Japan... wink
