It's be quite a while since I added to my collection. A couple of years ago I decided to down-size or "right-size" my collection. My Roadster has been the primary wrist-occupier over the last few years.

Well, I've had a serious desire to add to the collection. We all know when you get that itch, there's only one way to resolve it – acquire another watch! I've been looking at multiple pieces over the last few years. Yet, there were usually out of my league - either too large for my wrist or too large for my wallet. Some just didn't do it for me in the flesh.

I've been mostly a lurker on PuristSPro. Well, back in February, Anthony posted "GP releases blue dialed versions of its GP 1966 & Vintage 1945 XXL Petite Seconde." I fell in love with that Vintage 1945 XXL in the blue:

Then, to make matters worse, Blomman just had to make his two posts, 1.) β€œGirard-Perregaux, Vintage XXL, blue – a second look” and 2.) β€œVintage XXL - is the case too big?”:

Since then, I've been dying to see piece this in the flesh. To be quite honest, I was also worried that it would be too large for the wrist. I've always wanted to add a GP to my collection. I almost acquired the 1945 King Size Moon-Phase in rose gold with a blue dial back in 2005. But, the JLC Master Moon was the winner that time.

Yesterday, I finally paid a visit to my local GP AD. Granted, they were probably getting sick on me showing up and leaving without a purchase over the last few years! They had the silver dial, but not the blue. They were kind enough to have one shipped overnight directly from GP. Well, today I had the chance to see it in the flesh:

A better shot of the satin-finish blue dial in the sunlight:

I love the curvature of the case and the dial:

An added plus - it matches the stone of my class ring:

Well, my patience finally paid off. More importantly, the AD patience with me finally paid off. I decided to put down a deposit. This is the one, my next acquisition! I absolutely loved this piece. That satin-finished blue dial in the curved SS Vintage 1945 case was absolutely gorgeous! I also like the simplicity of the entire package with that little subtle touch of red in the "60."

To answer Blomman's question - Is the case too big? My wrist size is approximately 6.75" and I believe it fits great, thanks to the curvature of the case. So, I say no. Would I like it slightly smaller? Sure, but, I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the watch felt on my wrist. Then again, my maritime academy class ring is also quite large! It's all relative.

Something to also consider: When I tried the silver dial piece, the tail of the strap was in the usual 6 o'clock position. For the blue dial, the tail was at the 12 o'clock position. For some reason, it just felt more comfortable in that position. This was also true with my JLC Master Moon. Thus, you may want to consider that when you try on this piece.

Now, I just have to be patient for a few more months before it's officially part of my collection. It really does pay . . . I mean empty your wallet . . . to be patient. Thanks for looking!

About the Girard-Perregaux Ref. Vintage1945

The Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 line, introduced in 1994, draws inspiration from historical models, specifically a 1945 Art Deco piece. This collection is characterized by its rectangular or tonneau-shaped cases and a design language that evokes mid-20th century aesthetics. The Vintage 1945 series quickly became a cornerstone of Girard-Perregaux's offerings in the 1990s, reinterpreting classic forms with contemporary watchmaking standards. It represents a significant period for the brand in re-establishing its heritage-inspired collections.

Early models in the Vintage 1945 series typically featured stainless steel cases, though gold variants were also produced. The case dimensions varied depending on the specific model, often presenting a balanced profile suitable for dress wear. These watches were frequently equipped with automatic movements, showcasing Girard-Perregaux's in-house capabilities or finely finished outsourced calibers. The crystal was commonly sapphire, ensuring durability and legibility, while water resistance was generally suitable for daily wear rather than aquatic activities.

For collectors, the Vintage 1945 series appeals to those interested in neo-vintage watches that successfully blend historical design with modern execution. The 1994 introduction year marks it as one of the earlier and more influential lines from Girard-Perregaux's resurgence in the 1990s. Its various iterations, including time-only, small seconds, and later complicated versions, offer a range of choices for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive rectangular watch with a clear lineage.

Among the GPs I prefer

... and among the nicest rectangular rectangular watches. The curved case, dial, glass, hands are just amazing on the wrist. Smart color too. Enjoy it!

Excellent and very cool catch, Mach.

The shape of the case is to die for, the blue dial is exquisite, and should I say, the name on the dial makes me dream! One slight regret, I would have really loved to see it in a slightly reduced case. But not a reson enough to not fully enjoy it! BRAVO. Nicolas.
