Friends,

Here are two shots – one of the new Girard-Perregaux Stradale  chronograph and one of its precursors the 4946.

The 4946 case is 38 mm in diameter and bezel is angled and flat on the top.

But, you can clearly see from where the Stradale has its roots.

The new Stradale case is 42 mm in diameter and as you case see, a bit stronger lugs, rounded bezel and domed pushers.

I am very impressed by how well the balance and proportions are kept on this new case despite the 4 mm enlargement.

Happy to see GP having a classic sports chronograph line back in the collection!

About the Girard Perregaux Gyromatic Ref. 4946

The Girard-Perregaux reference 4946 is a notable example from the brand's production during the 1960s, representing a period of design evolution for the manufacturer. This reference is characterized by its understated aesthetic, reflecting the prevailing design sensibilities of the era for dress watches. It offers a clear indication of Girard-Perregaux's approach to automatic timekeeping in a more compact form factor, distinguishing it from larger or more complicated offerings of the time.

The watch features a stainless steel case measuring 34mm in diameter, a size typical for men's watches of its decade. It is fitted with an acrylic crystal, common for watches of this period, providing durability and ease of maintenance. The timepiece is powered by the automatic GP Caliber 39, which provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The dial is presented in a silver finish, complemented by a fixed bezel and a leather strap.

This reference appeals to collectors interested in vintage Girard-Perregaux pieces that embody the brand's mid-century design language and mechanical craftsmanship. Its straightforward date complication and classic proportions make it a versatile piece for those seeking a historically accurate representation of the brand's output. The 4946 offers a glimpse into the foundational elements that would influence later Girard-Perregaux designs.

But I prefer 38 mm;-) Ronald

The lugs are part of the attraction - brawny, masculine, but refined. But in any case, both the 38mm and 42mm cases retain much of the charm of the GP chronograph case - kudos to them for preserving that!

the DNA and the evolution are very clearly visible. While the 4946 may be a tad more elegant, the Stradale is more sporty, so the increase in size makes sense. I really need to see that one in the metal. CC

I'd like to see the differences you point out.. As for size, there was an intermediate step. The Classiques; the 4958, they were 40mm. So it is a bit more gradual increase. We need someone to put all three sizes together to see the evolution. You have your task set out for you, young Obi Wan.

The new Stradale is an attractive re-interpretation; the red sec hand a nice color tint.. For me the 42mm is very much ok, but think one might have to see in real, both side to side.. Thx for sharing this Duo, Best, hs

But you should try the 42 - surprisingly good fit no matter wrist size! Best Blomman
