Crown comfort shares an intimate look into his collection of Girard Perregaux Ellipse dress watches, focusing on the Reference 9628 NF. His post offers a detailed account of the watch's characteristics and his personal journey of acquiring and appreciating this specific model. This article highlights the unique appeal of the Ellipse case and the subtle variations that make collecting these vintage pieces so rewarding.
Today I want to show some more photos and provide some information on one of my Ellipse GP dress watches, the 9628 NF. The two letters at the end of the Reference number relate to the case material/strap/bracelet and dial colour. I do know that there have been many different versions, but I don’t have a full overview of the various Reference numbers.
Reference 9628 NF is a case with strap, steel with yellow gold plated and gold-coloured dial.
I own another 9628 NA, which is Steel with blue dial.
I have seen versions with steel bracelet combined with blue, black or silver dial, same on the steel case with strap. Gold-plated case I have only seen the gold-coloured dial both with strap and bracelet. In addition, there are some special dial designs as well, but the one I’m personally missing (maybe it existed) is a gold case with blue dial.
Back to the 9628 NF: the case measures a good 30 x 32 mm without crown and lugs. It has a flat plexi and a snap on case back. Inside is a manual-wind, I believe Peseux-based movement.
This watch is just back from service after I had waited over 5 months. The dial was in excellent condition and also the movement only needed a basic clean and oil service. The case and the plexi on the other hand were quite beaten up, so needed some attention. Furthermore, the crown was a non-signed after-market.
When I bought this watch, I really wanted to get a 9628 in steel with blue dial but couldn’t find one and when this became available I could pick it up for small change. Initially, this watch did not speak to me, especially as I shortly after found the steel/blue dial version. I was considering selling it again. What actually changed my mind, was when I put a dark blue strap on it. Hmmm, that looked classy and I decided to do the necessary works on the case and plexi to add it to the collection. I’m now very glad I made that decision.
It’s certainly not a watch for every day and a bit dandy, but then it has some understated class that comes with the elliptical shape. I love it. In fact, I’m now looking even at another vintage GP elliptical from the same era but a slightly different case also in gold/gold, but that’s another story…

Very nice post, CC. Well written, well documented, and nice pics! Best, and thank you. Nicolas
indeed the Steel is a very different character. I will hold on to that as the dial has some flaws and I want to see to find a replacement dial. If everything fails I'll fix the dial in photoshop ;) On the photos: I'm just learning from the Master! CC
My friend, now the watch looks fantastic! :) And I see you already started to use the Borat system... Yopu learn fast! :) Best Blomman
and yes, I'm, a fast learner. I will take new photos of my whole colllection in the coming days...weeks... :)
