Blomman Mr Blue showcases his Girard-Perregaux Deep Diver 9108 with a striking grey dial, a companion piece to his earlier blue dial version. He highlights the watch's monochrome aesthetic, creamy patina, and the unique feel of its vintage steel bracelet, offering a personal perspective on its wearability and visual impact.

Friends,

Earlier this year I showed you the Girard-Perregaux Deep Diver 9108 Blue dial.

I was hoping for a white Christmas, but it doesn’t look like it going to be any snow this year…

So I will have to settle for a grey Xmas!

The Girard-Perregaux Deep Diver 9108 with grey dial:

On steel bracelet this grey version get very monochrome and quite cool.

The only thing breaking the grey is the creamy patina of the luminous material (< 25 mc) and the inner black rotating bezel.

As many of the vintage Girard-Perregaux bracelets, the links are very soft and supple.

It follows your wrist without chafing.

But the bracelet is quite thick and heavy.

On the wrist it is a big Funky watch, looking very powerful in my opinion.

But you know me; I do prefer a matching leather strap!

Same cushion shaped case.

Same compressor crows, only the lower (time) crown signed.

The very cool engraving on the back (my avatar) the Deep Diver Trident!

Now it starts to get interesting, remember I mentioned that I saw several 9108 with cases dated 2-70?

Inside of this grey Deep Diver is also 2-70 (February 1970).

In the blue Deep Diver was the GP Caliber 461, here is the GP Caliber 460.

Two watches from the same year with different movements?

Strange you might think.

Yes, the 461 was only used in 1970 while the 460 was in use between 1970 and 1974.

But, both the 460 and 461 is based on the same Caliber FHF 905.

If I understand correctly the differences is in how the base plate is fixed (I may be wrong, my French is close to non-existing).

Another interesting thing is the reference number.

You remember that we discussed the two letters in the end, if they represented the dial and/or case version.

Well, both the blue and the grey belong to the 9108 FA which points to the batch theory.

Both also having cases from 2-70.

So, here they are, the two bulky sisters!

smile

The grey 9108 and the blue 9108:

So, what will be the next step? Red?!

smile

Or the black?

I don’t know…

Either way I wish you all a Merry Grey Christmas! Ho, ho, ho…

wink

Best

About the Girard Perregaux Deep Divers Ref. 9108

The Girard Perregaux Deep Divers reference 9108 is a notable example from the brand's mid-century sports watch offerings. This particular reference is recognized for its robust construction and functional design, characteristic of watches intended for active use during its era. It represents a specific period in the brand's development of water-resistant timepieces, distinct from later iterations.

The watch typically features a stainless steel case, housing an automatic movement. The case diameter is generally in the range of 40mm, providing a substantial presence on the wrist. The crystal protecting the dial is commonly acrylic, consistent with watches of this period, chosen for its durability and resistance to shattering under impact. The movement provides a reliable power reserve suitable for daily wear.

This reference appeals to collectors interested in vintage sports watches and the historical development of water-resistant designs. It offers a glimpse into Girard Perregaux's approach to tool watches before the widespread adoption of modern diving watch standards. The 9108 is appreciated for its authentic vintage aesthetic and its place within the brand's heritage of functional timekeeping instruments.

I love the effect of what would normally be a bezel living inside the the crystal. A safer place for this indispensable aspect of the watch. Enjoy that beauty. Bill
