In this insightful article, 'this_hobby_of_hours' shares his passion for neo-vintage Girard Perregaux, specifically highlighting the rare GP Abarth 4946 with its distinctive Havana dial. He delves into the unique provenance and design philosophy that define this off-catalog piece, encouraging collectors to look beyond superficial aesthetics and appreciate the deeper historical and horological significance of such timepieces. His detailed exploration offers a compelling case for the enduring value of GP's Macaluso-era creations.

The Girard-Perregaux reference 4946 is a notable example from the brand's production during the 1960s, representing a period of design evolution for the manufacturer. This reference is characterized by its understated aesthetic, reflecting the prevailing design sensibilities of the era for dress watches. It offers a clear indication of Girard-Perregaux's approach to automatic timekeeping in a more compact form factor, distinguishing it from larger or more complicated offerings of the time.
The watch features a stainless steel case measuring 34mm in diameter, a size typical for men's watches of its decade. It is fitted with an acrylic crystal, common for watches of this period, providing durability and ease of maintenance. The timepiece is powered by the automatic GP Caliber 39, which provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The dial is presented in a silver finish, complemented by a fixed bezel and a leather strap.
This reference appeals to collectors interested in vintage Girard-Perregaux pieces that embody the brand's mid-century design language and mechanical craftsmanship. Its straightforward date complication and classic proportions make it a versatile piece for those seeking a historically accurate representation of the brand's output. The 4946 offers a glimpse into the foundational elements that would influence later Girard-Perregaux designs.
Especially without the date window.
Itβs so simple β¦ not like we are asking for more. We are asking for LESS. π
That really is just so nice the dial colour with silver hour markers and hands just work so well together plus the dial is nice and sharp and clean, especially without the date at 4:30. As you have said it really is a shame that Girard Perregaux can't just bring us a version of this now as I'm sure it would be great for their sales and reputation. Wear and enjoy yours in good health. Marc
And folks who think 350 is rare β¦. They donβt know how rare some GPs can be. 50 pieces made of this Abarth Havana dial. Oh wait, some people only buy brand new from the ADs? Reminds me of folks that only buy βnewβ pets from the pet shop. SPCA has such darlings waiting for love and they go to a pet shop breeder instead. π
that folks who make βem donβt always know the hearts and minds of those who collect βem. π€
Thanks for sharing the shots ππ»
