TheMadDruid's acquisition of a Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1999 chronograph sparks a discussion among collectors about the model's enduring appeal and common issues. His post highlights the exceptional casework of GP's 1999 and 1945 Art Deco-styled watches, while also addressing a specific concern regarding hand corrosion. This article delves into the community's shared experiences and insights on this beloved reference.

Last watch before the new year. This one replaces a steel ‘99 I had and sold a few years ago. (Brauner, Nicolas-I know how you feel). This is just about the perfect watch. GP has always been excellent with their casework but in my mind the 1999 and 1945 Art Deco styling and solid cases are the best they do.

There is one issue with this watch:the minute and hour hands seem to suffer from some corrosion or scraping.

Any thoughts on the cause of this; and what can/should be done about it?

Thanks for looking.
Happy New Year to all. And for Vlad…

About the Girard-Perregaux Ref. Vintage1999

The Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1999 chronograph is a notable piece within the brand's Vintage collection, characterized by its distinctive Art Deco-inspired design. It represents a period where Girard-Perregaux emphasized classic aesthetics combined with contemporary watchmaking. The model is recognized for its balanced proportions and refined finish, appealing to collectors seeking a blend of historical design cues and modern reliability.

This chronograph typically features a solid case, often in precious metals such as rose gold, housing an automatic mechanical movement. The dial layout is clean and legible, with applied numerals and a bicompax chronograph sub-dial configuration. Specific details such as case dimensions and water resistance vary by exact reference, but the overall construction prioritizes a dress-watch aesthetic with functional chronograph capabilities.

For collectors, the Vintage 1999 holds relevance due to its strong design language and the quality of its construction. Its aesthetic aligns with the broader Art Deco revival seen in watchmaking during the late 20th century, making it a distinctive choice. The model's enduring appeal is often tied to its casework and the overall coherence of its design.

Assuming this is red gold, is usually caused by the copper corroding from within. At least that's what I have read somewhere. I also see some of it on the numbers, especially the 8.

I don’t see any on the numbers. I think that’s just shadows. I hope.

Thanks. It really is a beauty. I like it so much more than the steel.
