Jay (Eire) shares a deeply personal reflection on his F.P. Journe Vagabondage II, a timepiece that defied market trends and personal preferences to become a cherished part of his collection. His post offers a rare glimpse into the mindset of a seasoned collector who values uniqueness and intrinsic appeal over fleeting popularity. This article explores Jay's enduring connection with a watch that stands apart, and the community's insights into its horological significance.

First off, thanks to Christian for keeping our little Journe storyboard going strong and free from conflict.  This entire platform is, save for one of two little scuffles, generally free of conflict and focused on the commonality rather than the differences.

Second, a special day as we head into a new year.  So that required a special watch for me.

I’ve been fortunate to own this watch for a long long time, and while it was always worn irregularly (back then a rose gold watch wasn’t necessarily something I liked to wear daily) in more recent years I have worn this less and less.

But today it felt like a Vagabondage day.

This Vagabondage II is very much a watch that stood outside of the traditional Journe catalogue.  And this was the reason it caught my eye so many years ago.

There’s more to the story there as to why I was convinced enough to spend what was at that time a lot of money on a watch, not to mention paying full freight for a Journe in a market where 90% of the watches sold below list price (not to mention where the second hand market was at that time).

Enough of the words, here are the pictures.

About the F.P. Journe Vagabondage I Ref. vagabondage

The F.P. Journe Vagabondage I represents the inaugural reference in the Vagabondage series, introduced in 2004. This reference establishes the foundation for F.P. Journe's exploration of unconventional time display concepts within a compact case format.

The 36.5mm platinum case houses the manual-winding caliber 1509 movement, delivering 40 hours of power reserve. The silver dial is protected by sapphire crystal, while a fixed bezel maintains clean lines. Water resistance extends to 30 meters, and the watch is completed with a leather strap.

This reference appeals to collectors seeking F.P. Journe's approach to alternative time displays in a more intimate case size. The platinum construction and manual movement align with the brand's commitment to traditional materials and hand-winding mechanisms. As the first Vagabondage reference, it occupies a specific position for collectors interested in F.P. Journe's horological concepts beyond conventional displays.

And with one of the most memorable strap combinations on the net 🙌🏻👏🏻👍🏻

I think it’s been on this strap for at least a decade. The other custom strap I ordered for it at that time remains untouched (it was a Hermes orange ostrich). But I don’t think anything works as well on this watch for me than this camo.

These days there are definitely more than just you and I that think this. Which was long overdue.
