Warning.. Slightly rambling post ahead..

Well this is an early SOTC, as I think I'm pretty much done for the year, and maybe even a couple more. Had a flurry of activity recently with some pieces making way for others, but at this moment in time, I experience an equilibrium in the collection that I have not felt before..

If you will bear with me, I will take you through the thought process of what makes up this group that I think I'm now happy with!

First the outs:

AP ROO Panda

A brilliant watch, no doubt, my favourite in the line of 42mm offshores, which is why I got it. However with a 6 inch wrist it always wore big for me, and was thus relegated to weekend duty, which for me isn't ideal for a watch at it's cost. Managed to get a decent fee for it, which helped in my most recent acquisitions..

Pam 390

Made a bit of a loss on this, but I had one too many pams, and this, not having much sentimental value whatsoever, had to go.

Rolex 1680

Had this for slightly over a year.. Nice piece with decent case and patina. However the non-quickset date drove me crazy, especially when it's worn only once in a while in the rotation. In future I might bite if I come across a nice 5513 (hopefully a gilt specimen!)

Now the ins:

Lange 1 Moonphase

Hands down my favourite watch in the collection. After getting this piece, I realised how watches of its calibre stood head and shoulders above the rest in the collection, which prompted me to pare down to a number of pieces I will really wear. Also a ticket to the wonderful but absolutely expensive world of Lange!

Patek Philippe Nautilus

My most recent acquisition - see my incoming post in the PP forum. I'm delighted with replacing the other Genta piece with this one, as I will be equally comfortable wearing it under a formal shirt, as I am with shorts and a tee shirt on the weekend. Wears like a dream on the wrist, too!

And the rest:

Omega Speedy 3570.50

As you can see, it comes in a pair, which I bought with my wife for our wedding. Although vintage Speedies especially with the 321 calibres have tempted me before, this will never leave the collection.

Pam 25

This was bought during my honeymoon in Italy, from the founding Panerai boutique in Florence. Wore this during my travels in Florence, Venice and Milan. So many memories attached to this piece of such a wonderful time. Although it is probably one of the least "iconic" in the collection, for similar reasons to the Omega, it will never be sold.

Pam 372

The beast of the collection at 47mm.. I know it is too big for me, but it's just such a beautiful watch to stare at. Such a faithful homage to the 6152 too.. Was considering whether to keep this or the 232, but I think it will probably be this one.

Pam 232

A nice piece too, but to be honest I'm still trying to sell it. The only piece in the collection I am trying to move at this time. However if I don't have any luck in doing so, it sure would be a beautiful watch to keep as well!

Sinn U1

A gift from my parents for my wedding. Good for beach holidays and in the pool.. I once saw someone start a thread on whether one could sell a watch gifted from their parents. Someone responded - would you sell your parents? That made me laugh.

IWC Portuguese

My wife chipped in to get this piece for my birthday last year. As such I decided that it will not be sold either. Wears a little big on my tiny wrist, but still camoflagable under long sleeves. Also the only white dial in the collection.. The 7 day power reserve doesn't hurt either!

JLC Reverso Tribute to 1931

I don't have the pictures to prove it, but this was bought as a pair with my wife too.. I love the look of the ultra thin tribute reverso, and its just awesome on the Casa Fagliano strap I ordered directly from them. One of my favourite pieces.

Rolex 1675 gilt

Have had this for about a year. Although it wasn't bought as part of any occassion, and wasn't gifted to me, I just dig the patina on this piece, and the gilt lettering on the dial. Hopefully there will be similarly nice vintage pieces I can have the fortune to pick up in future!

And there it is, my collection of 10 watches. Short of 2 to make the top 12, as per Baron's epic thread recently..

Is there a next piece, a grail? Of course.. I've been lusting after a datograph for a while now (and have started threads asking about it too). However a watch in that price bracket will need time to save up for, and I'm not prepared to let go any of the above pieces, other than the 232, to make room for it. Will take a while, but its the wait that makes it even more special in the end, isn't it?

To those who have read till the end, thank you for bearing with me! Also if I renege on my promise and start new threads asking about opinions on getting new pieces, hopefully some of you will slap me on the head and remind me of this post!

Finally I invite you to share the stories of your collections as well, although with the kind of collections you guys have, it might end up being like a thesis!

Cheers all, and have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

You have eclectic tastes, Dylan.

Between Moderns and Vintage, a nice personal journey into watches, into what you feel to be a collection. If I write " feel ", it is because you will certainly, with time passing, all along the years, " sharpen " your taste. So, in ten years, maybe your collection will evolve, no ,not maybe, certainly. How many among these will stay? Passionate question! Best, Nicolas

Nicolas..

.. A valid question to ponder indeed... I have divided the pieces into can-sells and cannot-sells, based on sentimental value/occassion in which I got them: Can: The Patek, Lange, Rolex, 232, 372 Cannot: The Omega, JLC, Pam 25, Sinn, IWC Other than the Pams, the pieces I like for what they are are actually in the "can" category.. As such the collection will be pretty stable for some time to come, I think! May move the 232 and 372 and at most the IWC down the line to fund the grail, but not much

This is a question we all have to ask to ourself, indeed.

I hear you... How exciting it is, too! Best, Nicolas

I do love these SOTC threads

Thanks dylan61 for the glimpse into your horological universe. I love the Lange 1 Moonphase, and actually the Portuguese looks great. A good set of ten. What I like about SOTCs is that they clearly show that everybody has different tastes. The odds of finding someone with the exact same 10 pieces must be in the billions. Looks like you are all set for a while, but hope that fortune strikes and you are able to achieve the Dato this year! Warmest, Dean
