Bernard Cheong shares his profound initial impressions of the De Bethune DB28, describing it as a creation of unparalleled purity and absorbing beauty. His reflections, penned upon the watch's arrival, delve into how such exceptional objects can transport one from daily struggles into a realm of aesthetic appreciation. This post offers a deeply personal and philosophical take on the power of haute horlogerie.

and to draw inwards and protect its owner.

I know this.

I work up to 16 hours to 18 hours to see suffering and complaints...sadness.

Now, after 3 decades of collecting all sorts of things beautiful and of great controversy, I came across several objects, very few...The Opus V was one such, and today, a standard so high, I have NOT yet seen or experienced OBJECTIVELY a creation so absorbing as the DB28.

This is something of great purity, of greatness that cannot be confined.

It is NOT inexpensive, but the only simple watches that are of this category belong to Opus V, Diavolo and the Parmigiani Bugatti Super sport.

Even the offering from DB25T is somewhat muted...I speak from the weight of ownership (painful when one is not super rich).

I share here the first VERY crude and rough pictures of my personal DB28 on the hour of its arrival last week.

The play of light on the curves of polished metal is only rivaled by the Opus V and the Bugatti Super Sport, both legends of watchmaking in my world.

These watches can CREATE worlds for you to inhabit, with the eyes and the mind...it can transport me from my clinic to a world of beauty and great meaning in life...doing things VERY WELL, and rewardingly it is fertile with goodness.

Please wait for my posts on the Bugatti Super Sport.

A sphere of precious metal.

A suspension of floating steel.

A disc of man made silicon.

Honest engineering.

Decoration from 11 spheres of gold as hour markers, exhorbitant with a certain love.

The lugs and strap, are unique to this watch. More to be told later.

The DB28 is something that is barely affordable, but IS affordable...at such low risk of loss.

One of the market's NO BRAINERS to buy.

This watch, makes me wish I made and sold watches for a living!

About the De Bethune DB28 Ref. DB28

De Bethune DB28 Reference DB28

The DB28 represents De Bethune's approach to contemporary haute horlogerie, featuring the brand's distinctive floating lug design within a 42.6mm case format. This reference showcases the manufacture's technical capabilities through its extended power reserve specification and proprietary movement caliber.

The 42.6mm titanium case houses the manual-winding caliber DB2115, delivering a 120-hour power reserve. The silver dial is protected by sapphire crystal, while the characteristic floating lugs define the case architecture. Water resistance extends to 30 meters, and the watch is completed with a leather strap.

This reference appeals to collectors focused on independent Swiss manufacture capabilities and contemporary case design. The DB28 represents De Bethune's technical approach to manual-winding movements, particularly notable for collectors interested in extended power reserve complications. Production commenced in 2010, positioning this reference within the brand's modern catalog offerings.

honest engineering, excellent finishing and arguably value for the $$$. you have always told me to collect historically significant pieces...how, in your opinion is this piece historic, if at all? and relative that argument to say VH Antiqua? congrats again, best, Horo

the moment of wearing your personal DB28 for the first time. It looks to me like a happy marriage between technology and art. Enjoy it and wear it in good health, Stefan

an over exuberance in decor and styling. It is one of those things like a fighter jet plane, can't be any serious beauty/aesthetics department there, but they (some) look beautiful just from functional design.
