Pkonos offers a rare, in-depth look at The Citizen Caliber 0100 (ref. AQ6010-06A), a limited-edition timepiece that redefines quartz accuracy. His firsthand account provides invaluable insights into the watch's remarkable performance and the intricate engineering behind its +/- 1 second per year rating. This article explores why this particular reference, and Citizen's broader commitment to high-accuracy quartz, remains a significant topic for collectors.
Speaking of Japanese watches, t his is The Citizen Caliber 0100 (ref. AQ6010-06A), announced in 2019 and sold in a limited edition of 100 worldwide.
An embodiment of Citizen’s prowess and pride in quartz technology, the 0100 houses what is, to my understanding, the most autonomously accurate watch in the world, rated at an astounding +/- 1 second per year. Experience with the watch suggests that spec may even be conservative, as my 0100 has accumulated over the past 5 or so years a grand total of +1 second !
As I understand it, the company first carefully ages, then selects the most stable quartz in-house, and then undertakes to cut the crystal in a manner that enables it to vibrate at a frequency 250 times higher than regular quartz. The movement is also internally monitored and thermocompensated every minute, allowing it to retain stable timekeeping under varying gravitational forces and temperatures.
Citizen has much to be proud of with this movement, so they’ve understandably fitted the watch with something rare for a quartz watch -- a handsome display back.
The hands and hour markers are zaratsu
polished, although my rudimentary photo skills fail to capture their sparkle and
beauty (those who might want to have a better look can do so via Google).
In a nod to daily wear, the case is WR to 50M, and the hands and markers at 3, 6, 9 and 12 are discreetly filled and dotted with luminous material. The PR under full charge is an ample 6 months. The case and buckle are of white gold.
On the wrist, it is understated, eminently legible and comfortable. The white gold case sits well, with the help of the gold buckle acting somewhat as a counterweight, and the croc strap is surprisingly supple.
The second hand lands squarely on each thin minute marker, and moves with an agreeable precision and deliberateness free of any hint of vibration or shimmy.
Overall, the 0100 provides an eminently satisfying and confidence inspiring wearing experience knowing that it is as fault free a timekeeper as currently possible without corrective GPS or radio signalling.
Citizen also now offers an eponymous, non-limited line of ultra-accurate
timepieces fitted with the 0100 caliber.

Congratulations nevertheless on this amazing piece!
Yes, I certainly know what you mean about the price. I felt the pain, but the joy it brought me was fortunately a good salve : )
I wish I did buy it. It's a really cool watch. The accuracy is amazing.
I agree completely about the accuracy. Kind of epitomizes the timekeeping endeavor. Perhaps one of their current Caliber 0100 offerings might tempt you again?
