MTF's forum post, "Require PuristS Opinion - Chronographs?", initiates a critical discussion on chronograph dial design, a topic central to both aesthetics and legibility in watchmaking. This thread is invaluable for collectors and enthusiasts seeking to understand the nuanced preferences and functional considerations that go into creating an effective and appealing chronograph dial. It highlights the ongoing debate between traditional and modern design principles.
Dear Forumners,
I need your help.
I had an "interesting' (read that as heated) discussion with a chronograph specialist about dial design. Please vote on 2 questions and/or give opinion.
1) What is a good dial-numerals colour combination?
My vintage chronograph specialist says matt silver (near white) dial with black font: W
I say black lacquer or painted enamel dial with white font: B
Please vote W(hite) or B(lack) dial.
2) What is good font combination?
Plan A is a a few e.g. 4 ROMAN markers for the time display (rest are batons) and all ARABIC numbers on chronograph sub-dials.
Plan B is a few e.g. 4 ARABIC markers for the time display (rest are batons) and also ARABIC numbers on chronograph sub-dials.
Please vote Half Roman-Arabic or Full Arabic.
e.g. My Vote: Black Dial Half Roman-Arabic.
Note that most analogue instruments in aircraft and automobiles have black dials with arabic numerals. The black dial rose gold case Datogarph is sublime
Regards,
MTF
