A special edition created for Cortina’s 40th Anniversary

Chopard collaborates with Cortina Watch to create a spectacular, limited edition of its L.U.C XP Skeletec to pay tribute to the exclusive retailer of luxury timepieces as well as to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The latest addition to the XP line, the sophisticated and elegant L.U.C XP Skeletec epitomising the philosophy of essentials. Its mechanical self-winding movement, L.U.C Calibre 96.17-S, takes the art of meticulous workmanship to extreme lengths. This ultra-thin movement equipped with two barrels is the first skeletonised calibre produced by Chopard Manufacture.

After launching several Tech models with openworked dials, Chopard is moving a step further in the art of meticulous craftsmanship with the L.U.C XP Skeletec model, revealing one of the most demanding accomplishments in the field of Haute Horlogerie: an ultra-thin skeletonised movement.

An ultra-thin skeletonised movement
Ultra-thin L.U.C Calibre 96.17-S, the first skeletonised movement ever made by Chopard Manufacture, features a blend of technical sophistication and refined elegance. This self-winding calibre beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), boasts a 65-hour power reserve thanks to the Twin® technology, a Chopard-patented system combining two coaxial barrels and representing a truly remarkable technical feat in light of the extreme slenderness of the 3.3 mm-thick movement. Its mainplate adorned with Côtes de Genève on the dial side, as well as its bridges, are meticulously openworked to reveal its inner workings. The latter are rhodium-plated black and create a contrast that cleverly highlights the gilded gear wheels visible both on the dial side and through the back.

Distinctive design
The silvered satin-brushed dial forming a ring between the case and the heart of the watch enables clear readability of the time. The unexpected two-tone effect it creates with the 18-carat rose gold case adds considerable strength of character to this model that derives unique elegance from this distinctive design feature. Two gilded Dauphine-type hands and the inscription L.U.Chopard on the glareproofed sapphire crystal further enhance the refined appearance of this 39.5 mm-diameter ultra-thin watch.

The limited edition watch is offered on an alligator leather strap with an 18-carat rose gold pin buckle. This version is specially created in a 40-piece exclusive series with the engraving of “Cortina Watch 40th Anniversary” on the backcase and is delivered in a special box bearing an engraved plaque celebrating the occasion.

Unusual for me to say this but....

I usually don't like the 'Tech' style in the L.U.C. range especially when they mash up classic design cues of the case work with the tech design elements. I am disconcerted by seconds hands sub-dials off at crazy angles like 8 o'clock or 10 o'clock positions. Strangely, this L.U.C. XP Skeletec seems to work visually and I am worriedly wondering why! It may be that there is no seconds hand and thus no markers to be confused with the dial and movement fenestrations? It may be that there is some di
