AntĂłnio, known as pessoa00 on WatchProSite, initiates a compelling discussion on the enduring appeal of the Cartier Tank, specifically contrasting its automatic and manual-wind variants. His personal quest to integrate this iconic rectangular watch into a diverse collection highlights a common dilemma for collectors: balancing modern wearability with vintage charm and collection diversity. This exploration offers valuable insights for anyone considering a Cartier Tank, particularly regarding size perception and movement preference.

Been thinking about adding a Cartier to my collection for sometime and went to try these 2 models today at my local AD.

I’m not much into squared watches, but find the Tank such an iconic model, that think it is the best candidate, within my budget, on the Cartier lineup.

The automatic seemed a better fit for my wrist. I also really liked the yellow gold colour and the strap combination. The larger size made it look closer to a modern dress watch, suited to more formal wearing.

The manual also felt good seen through the mirror and the smaller size gave it some vintage “vibe” that felt paired nicely with the very casual clothes I typically wear. Looking directly to my wrist it did feel a bit too small, at least compared to the models I’m use to, but that maybe a matter of getting use to it.

In the end I left the store undecided. The automatic seemed a more natural choice, but I have a steel reverso which is about the same size (although thicker) and I rarely use it, so am afraid this would end up have the same fate.

The smaller one seemed to add more diversity to my collection and, because of that vintage vibe, maybe be a better fit to my casual clothes but am afraid I end up not getting use to its smaller size.

Would love to know your thoughts on these. To give it more context, my collection is reasonably large (a bit over 20 pieces) and diverse (from about 13 different brands) and I use most of them on rotation. I only have one coloured gold watch (an early nineties navitimer).

Thanks

AntĂłnio

The tank is what brought me to the brand, although I yet have to get one. As part of a rotation the manual caliber is just fine, only takes a few seconds and requires little effort. I have a slight preference for the cleaner dial and guilloche pattern of the rose gold model but the YG looks good on you. If color matching a wedding band is a requirement it may influence your decision. There is a case to be made that tanks look better in moderate sizes and there are lots of larger models to choose

...please let me make my case for the black sheep of the family: The Pasha C (in this case a GMT). It is not famous for being seen on the wrist of Jackie O or Lady Di, nor was it designed for an aeronautic pioneer. No...the story is most likely just that...a story. But still there is the hand of Gerald Genta, the uncommon round design, the quirky details of the Vendome lugs and the screw-down crown cap. It is a watch that perplexes some, is dismissed by others and therein lies its appeal. IF you

because it is a rectangular watch. Looks more elegant. But both are nice. No matter if automatic or hand wind.

Really only you can decide which one you like best and there are no wrong choices. The only thing I would say is that it is amazing how quickly the brain can adjust to a smaller watch on the wrist and it becomes normal quite quickly, well at least for me it has. Marc

Thanks! I also liked how it looked through the mirror

The manual does seem to add more diversity to my collection and I have a soft spot for manual wind watches which still are in a very small minority in my collection
