amanico's exploration of automotive 're-editions' delves into a fascinating trend where classic car designs are reimagined for the modern era. This article highlights several compelling examples, from the iconic Porsche 911 DLS by Singer to electric interpretations of the Alfa Giulia GT and BMW M3 E30. His post sparks a vibrant discussion among collectors about the merits and future of these meticulously crafted vehicles.

We recently discussed the re interpretation of the Volvo P 1800 by Cyan or the modern alpine A 110. But it seems that is a new trend.

Here are some examples which are with some discussions and thoughts.

The 911 DLS by Singer is one of the most famous:

What about the 914 by Fifteen Eleven? It is an electric one, at the contrary of the Singer.

My heart clearly goes for the Singer, here, and not only because it is not an electric one...

Now let's see the Alfa Giulia GT... Nice, but electric...

And the Spider? Electric, alas... By Garage Italia.

Close to the original, the BMW M3 E30. With a bigger engine ( 2, 5 L instead of 2, 3) and the addition of a turbo, this car has much more power, with 390 HP.

And last but not least, the David Browne by Speedback. An interpretation based on a Jaguar XK. The Purist may not appreciate, I find it superb, even if it lost the purity of the original, but it is, at least for me, eye catching.

On another note, what about this VW Minibus electric?

What do you think? A good idea or a sacrilege?

Best,
Nicolas

About the Porsche Ref. 911

The Porsche Design Chronograph I, reference 911, represents a significant early offering from the brand, establishing its design philosophy in the watchmaking world. This model is notable for its minimalist aesthetic and functional approach, reflecting the brand's automotive heritage through its focus on legibility and material choice. It was conceived as a tool watch, prioritizing clarity and durability over ornate decoration, a characteristic that set it apart from many contemporaries upon its introduction.

Crafted with a black PVD-coated stainless steel case, the Chronograph I features a distinctive monochromatic appearance. The case diameter measures 40mm, providing a substantial yet wearable presence on the wrist. It houses an automatic movement, specifically the Valjoux 7750, known for its robustness and reliability. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, ensuring scratch resistance, and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

This reference holds particular appeal for collectors interested in the origins of Porsche Design's horological ventures and the broader trend of black-cased watches. Its straightforward design and mechanical integrity make it a compelling choice for those who appreciate a blend of automotive-inspired engineering and practical watchmaking. The 911 reference is a foundational piece, illustrating the brand's initial vision for a performance-oriented timepiece.

It's one thing to build a resto-mod from an existing car. That's just a hot rod, and companies/individuals have been building those forever. But the stuff that's new-build and vintage style feels a bit like covers of established hit songs. Eddie Van Halen once opined that "I would rather bomb playing my own songs than be successful playing someone else's music." That's sort of how I feel. I'd rather designers take real risks trying to create new classics -- and failing at times -- than endlessly

But the size and character is not retro. Too much of a modern muscle

So much fun! I still think about her - the car, not the girl.😁

But that Singer 911 and that Speedback... Very nice interpretations of the essence of the originals. Though the Speedback is a bit of a abberation, I really like that one. Do you have an interior shot, Nico?
