The resemblance is striking at first blush!

In December 2015, Philippe Dufour gave a presentation in which he compared the movement and finishing of his Simplicity to a somewhat similar-looking watch. He didn't name the model or brand of that other watch at the presentation, but, well, let's just say there's a reason I'm posting this here in this thread.

The 1860 with the L.U.C. 1.96 movement is a true masterpiece. And for me, the date complication is the icing on the cake. I rely upon the date complication, so I always prefer a date complication that's unobtrusive and tastefully done. Matching the date disc background to the dial color on the 1860 was a stroke of genius.

The one on the right (salmon dial) is white gold. I bought it preowned from a fellow collector who was a friend and who listed it here. It came with a black-on-white date disc, which was puzzling to me. I asked Chopard why it had a black-on-white date instead of black-on-salmon, and Chopard was puzzled too. They had no idea. They thought it was a mistake, so they changed it to black-on-salmon (at no cost).

Did Chopard actually make the 1860 in platinum? Years ago, I asked Chopard this question. They said "yes" and showed me some specifications. But they said they had never seen one, and they didn't think it could be ordered at the time. I had never seen an actual photo of a platinum piece, nor had I met anyone who owned one. Several years later, a local friend of mine and fellow collector stumbled upon a platinum piece for sale. He bought it, kept it for several years, and then offered it to me. It as truly a stroke of dumb luck.

The 1860s with the 1.96 movement

Over the past year I have become more and more obsessed with these, and they are extremely difficult to find! Hard to believe one sold for $7500 here not too long ago Was wondering if anyone has come across any or is selling one? I really like the newer L...

My best advice is for you to post a FS ("for-sale") ad on our Collectors Market, which is the proper subsection for this request.

It's a beautiful piece so I'm leaving this thread open, in case other members want to contribute on its horological aspects. However, any offers (or relative discussions of market values) should only occur via PM. Thanks for your cooperation -- and good l...

Thank you, just posted

My pleasure👍

I've never understood Chopard's decision...

...to not offer this without a date window. It is such an elegant watch. It would be in the running for 'Perfect Dress Watch' sans date...

One of the very first good watches I tried really hard to buy

I thought I had a seller lined up, but did a last minute "safety check" with a friend who was registrar of voters in Frankfurt. He said the address was a tenement building in a very bad location in town (no offence if you live in that part of Germany). So...

They just created the whole dial I believe (guilloche + markers)

The resemblance is striking at first blush!

These are 1860/2 correct? Without the hinged caseback?

Correct. I don't think they ever made the 1860/1 (hinged case) in platinum. Only gold. And...

... I like the looks of the hinged casebacks but recall that they had some issues and they didn't open far enough. I've never seen one in person. More recently, I did visit the Chopard boutique multiple times to see the more recent XPS Officer 1860. It's ...

Wow

A platinum 1860? That's a rare find, and I love the look. You have two of the rarest ones. If you ever change your mind about the platinum one I'd like to consider it

Thanks! Yes, it took forever to find, and it was really funny to me that I finally found it with a local friend who didn't have to look hard at all...

He was just in the right place at the right time. I rarely part with watches, and I intend to hang onto this one. Good luck though, and it's too bad that the XPS 1860 isn't 36-38mm. Sounds like the size (40mm) is an issue for both you and me.

yup 40mm for a dressy watch is too big for me, even though I do think the XPS 1860 is beautiful

Pure class

The Chopard 1.96 is one of my favorite movements

Maybe a little known fact, Cedric Johner got a hold of a dozen or so 1.96 movements and put them in his signature Abyss case. I had one many, many moons ago. I can’t think of any other third-party manufacturer outside of Johner who has had the privilege o...

I didn't know that, Nick!

Yes, Cedric Johner was at Chopard until he started his eponymous brand

I wonder if he was involved in the original creation of the LUC 1.96 movement while he was there?

I didn’t know that, thanks!

It contains a real walk down Memory Lane, with names like Walt Odets and SteveG. I remember when SteveG's personal web page was THE place to go to look at cool watches. It still kind of is!

Truly a wonderful watch.

Here's a picture of my Chopard, I consider myself very lucky to have purchased this. Was very surprised at how relatively cheap they were when I bought it. ...

That is stunning! And I'm envious

The 1.96 is still a legend 🙌

1.96 just for kicks...

 By: MSB : February 10th, 2022-15:04
I had two of these both in the light dial and dark dial and in rose gold. I find 36 mm too small although this dial is a real winner. It was the beginning of Chopard into real Haute Horologie, and for that reason perhaps I should have kept one. The 1.96 w...

Well, I was able to get one.

Thanks to this post, a gentleman reached out and offered his for sale, and I couldn't resist. Just got it today and I am delighted! ...

Big congrats to you

I just missed one on C24 about a week ago, it was in white gold/white dial with the removable case back. Have to say the yellow gold is my first choice, although white gold with salmon dial would be hard to resist. Enjoy!

Thank you!

Someone posted a white gold/white dial one in Japan: But the price is rather absurd and it seems to have jumped up a lot
