Manufacturers' signed pin-buckles
Generic pin buckles come in packets of five from a wholesale supplier and are as cheap as chips. Generic straps nearly always come already fitted with a cheap buckle and sometimes with a spare second buckle in a contrasting colour so there is a choice of silver or gold at the point of sale.
As many here, I have seen a lot of second-hand watches for sale at auctions and retailers where the worn straps have been replaced over time and the original signed pin-buckles long gone.
I have never understood when it became necessary to replace a strap (they are all "consumables" during the lifetime of a watch) why the owner had not insisted in changing over an original signed buckle to a new strap.
It is my firm belief that some not so honest jewellers take advantage of watch owners who are sold and fitted generic straps where the replaced worn strap, complete with its original and signed buckle, are kept by the jeweller. After all, where have all those missing signed buckles gone? Certainly not all in the shops' refuse bins? Now look at the prices of signed buckles for sale, which collectors now seek.

Unfortunately I suspect the jeweller who replaced the strap for my mum to not being that honest and saw on front of him someone who had no clue and did not insisted in getting the buckle back though. A shame I was not in to watches at that moment otherwis...
