Re: Lasting Value?

Thankyou for your replies. I guess I'm really looking for some moral support to justify the decision to spend ?8,900 on something that 'makes me smile' that will work on the wife! I'm fully aware of the financial gains to be had by buying the 'right' model Rolex - the Daytona here, the Comex there etc. I have absolutely no idea about Breguet except that they do make me smile. Ultimately I want to have an 'interesting' piece which in addition to making me smile because it is beautiful, also gives a warm feeling due to its rarity, exclusivity, makes a statement and is actually quite a shrewd purchase as well. Which models do you and don't you have to wait for, what is the Breguet 'Daytona'? [Hoping I'm not being too commercial about it - I have bought the 5140 anyway!].

Lasting Value?

 By: Gary : July 28th, 2003-12:24
I'm a Breguet virgin, but have my eye on a 5140 with the enamel dial in YG. With its classic arabic numerals, hands and signature it is very reminiscent of the pocket watch design. I wonder though how 'desirable' this model is by watch afficionados. Which...

one thing I learned form these forums, is forget calling it an investment, make

sure you like it. That being said, I was told by a salesman at wemp once that patek and lange are the best value holders, dont depend on trading it in and doing well. That being said, Breguet due to past problems don't have strong trade in, but the new ow...

Agree on all accounts.....

buy a watch if it puts a smile on your face but forget the whole thing about holding value, the only brands where the watch usually holds value are Patek and Rolex and all depends on the model so go for what you like and enjoy

Alex, doesn't lange holld its value? And it is interesting that for all the rolex bashing

that occurs, they hold their value. They also were designed by one man to be self sufficiant, i.e. autowinding with bolt down crown. I am sure there are a lot of rolex owners who would proudly display their watches if they only made 1000 a year, lol.

any collector would be happy to wear. They are beautiful, and have a history that is so special. You now will be part of that history. First of all, i dont care if rolex were to hold its value better or people pay more. Rolex doesnt hold a candle to Bregu...

I fel better already. Now then, tell me why the white gold versions cost ?500 English Pounds more? Is the import duty regime different, do yellow and white gold not share the same tariff code! I suppose they add Palladium/Platinum/Uranium 238 or something...

Gary I have looked into my crystal watch and seen your future. One breguet 5140 in yellow

gold, one audemars piguet jules audemars in rose gold, a lange 1815 in platinum, and oh yes, anouther breguet in white gold for 500 pounds more. Only one little cloud in my crystal watch, the wife sticking around for all this is kind of cloudy.

Will try to comment more on this later, but basically, the Breguet "daytona"

are the original A.L. Breguet pocket watches. Liquidity is the forgotten variable in most "holds its value" discussions - how easy is it to sell at market price when you want to sell? Breguet is too much of a boutique brand to offer the same sort of liqui...

I'd just like to add my 2 cents, and I'll try to keep it short. I wrote at lenght on this subject on the TZ Breguet forum. Patek, ie the Sterns, created the preceived value of older Pateks by buying them up for their own collection and/or their museum. Th...

Mike it is interesting that you mention that Rolex "claims" to have

invented the automatic movement. I have heard that claim, but always thought it was A.L. Breguet. I am sure their is someone out there to shed a clear yet complicated light on this issue. Thank you to that person in advance. Jay

Breguet never claimed to have invented...

the self-winding system. In fact, Breguet's claim was to have perfected the system ie made it work. As Thomas says, the idea most likely came from working with other watchmakers in the area, quite possibly Perrelet. The system, as also mentioned by Thomas...
