I quite like the watch, the movement not so much

Hi Intex,

Here's something I wrote about the movement a few years ago:

"Piguet movements are very highly regarded by watch collectors but have a reputation among watchmakers for being primadonnas.

For many proud Piguet based watch owners (Blancpain, Breguet or otherwise), the movements perform reliably and accurately (enough) for many years and they will swear by them. I've yet to meet a watchmaker that will speak quite so glowingly of them (I'm a watchmaker).

They are beautiful movements in terms of decoration and bridge layout and are very thin. While the thinness adds to their cache among afficianados and some watchmakers, it does not contribute to their robustness or certainly serviceability. They can be very frustrating to work on although I prefer to think of them as "challenging".

This is not meant to discourage you from buying one, as I said, many (most) owners enjoy many years of trouble free service. Of course the manufacturers service centers are well capable of bringing them back to near factory fresh performance when service is required but on occasion it might take a few trys (to be painfully honest with you).

It's a little like buying a Ferrari or Bentley or other prestige, "performance" car though. If you go in understanding the potential pitfalls, you're less likely to get a rude awakening if it doesn't start right up some morning down the road."

You must keep in mind though that I'm a Watchmaker, so I probably value servicability and reliability much more highly than most enthusiasts. I've spouted off about this movement extensively over the years as the search function can verify.

I quite like the design of the watch and the quality of the case and dial are of course excellent.

Does Audemars Piguet make many of the movements for Breguet? I thought that they made most of their own movements? Am I misinformed?

Hello Intex, Breguet is making an increasing number of their own movements these days, in part because they changed the name of Lemania to Manufacture Breguet (Lemania made a variety of Breguet movements for many years as a sister company to the brand). T...

Your impression of this watch and movement? I understand that it is not a very expensive piece, but for not having any complications, and being in Stainless, it nevertheless is somewhat pricey. I just wanted to get an opinion that the watch and movement i...

Hi John/All - I just bought a used 3130 circa 1995 and, if by winding a movement, one can sense the quality, then the Piguet 71/Breguet 502 is not nearly as substantial as the Patek or Lange movements in similar complications. It would be interesting to h...
