That's all the problem. You nailed it. If it was a FF like the others, it wouldn't suffer from the comparison to the originals. And it is too close to the 50th Anniversary.
It would have been great to have a nice homage to the original. With a case closer to the original ( see Air Command or Bathyscaphe ) and no date, as the date was on later FFs, from the 70's, not on early FFs.
For those who don't pay too much attention to the original FF, it is a cool one. For those who are fans of the original FF, it is tough to swallow. Each of them have a different perspective.

I would have preferred without date, but this is beautiful in every respect. I even like the cool strap. I just didn’t realize it’s limited edition

A different strap can always be installed! And look at that finishing. For a serious dive watch, no dive watch has better finishing!
50 Fathoms 70th Anniversary
I managed to snag one, we will see how long the wait is, I too would prefer a more traditional strap option that would allow for viewing of the display back. MSB
