I just read your part 1; recognized every single word in it. Especially where he said min altitude was 500ft but most of time he flew at 200
When is was based in the Netherlands we did exactly same over Germany
I also still remember the big “simulated” attacks on the East Block
Dozens of squadrons of jets spread out over Western Europe would be scrambled, full weapons, life weapons and ordnance,
Target: your designated target
These scrambled were planned in such a way that all aircraft would arrive at the inner German border within less then a minute apart.
Imagine you were the Russian air defense radar operator at the end of his duty at 5.30 am. And all of a sudden he saw half NATO jets screaming towards him.
But also imagine the pilots in the cockpit. Who were not told it was an exercise or for real. And just when you’re 5 miles out from the border you hear: abort abort abort
I don’t know if your uncle is still alive. It looks he might be half generation older than me
But if he is still alive (or his family) please salute him from me.

This one was taken when I made one last low pass during my very last flight. Just come in low, over the runway go even lower (talking 20 ft), maintain relatively speed (approx 360 Nm/hr) Then at the end of the runway kick in full afterburner and pull it s...

Your comment about easing off the throttles quickly reminded me of a story told to me by our Uncle Brownie, where he fell behind his wingman and after hitting his afterburners trying to catch up, shot past at 100’s of miles an hour faster. Oops. You might...

Yep that happened to all of us I’m afraid haha I’ll read the story with great interest. And the nice thing is, although I’m Dutch, I did serve 7 years as an instructor pilot, later check pilot and flight commander in the United States Airforce and till to...
