 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-07:22
38mm case, ceramic bezel insert, no-date black dial, and a high-grade, in-house movement in a limited edition of 100 pieces. Meet the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Limited Edition for HODINKEE. Sold Out ! Photo Credit: HODINKEE Photo Credit: HODINKE...

+ 1. I went online to order and

 By: emcquillan : July 17th, 2019-21:10
When it was sold out I thought “meh, it’s a nice watch, but it won’t haunt me and I was instantly happy I didnt spend the money”

Now that this has come (and gone) can we have a break from "H" please?

 By: cazalea : July 17th, 2019-07:27
and get back to our watches? Thanks Cazalea

Yes

 By: @lberti : July 17th, 2019-07:27
Thank ou😎

Yes I agree...

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-07:30
I will ask H not to issue any more “Special” editions as it’s wasting valuable time in our community.

😂 [nt]

 By: KC74 : July 17th, 2019-07:32

I absolutely agree!

 By: als1678 : July 17th, 2019-07:35
But what happens when they announce a grand seiko (no date of course!) for hodinkee

Same here

 By: ripper444 : July 17th, 2019-18:22
This watch is ugly in my opinion. Blancpain in general is meh... In fact I said it before it's like a over priced planet ocean!

You have to hand it to Hodinkee

 By: Boris : July 17th, 2019-07:34
These guys have a very sure taste. This is as good as anything Blancpain could have done.

Agreed. It has proven their prowess and

 By: KC74 : July 17th, 2019-07:41
the powerful social media platforms in selling just about anything. Congratulations 👏🏻👍🏻

as a friend just said

 By: psfparis : July 17th, 2019-07:43
10k.....very expensive for a Baltic baltic-watches.com he

Totally agree.

 By: Brandon Skinner : July 17th, 2019-10:34
To the point of a post from a few days back on here, had Blancpain made this on their own and produced 500-1000 they could have sold out as well.

Very nice, i like it.

 By: VMM : July 17th, 2019-07:40
38 mm! Vte

Could have bought it

 By: Lankysudanese : July 17th, 2019-07:41
...and either wore it or sold it for a profit (as most of these H editions do these days). But I made the [relatively simple] decision to move on and leave it for those who are truly in love with it. Now, if it were a 40mm fifty fathoms with sapphire beze...

Why doesn't Blancpain just release

 By: dhendolan : July 17th, 2019-07:49
A no date FF?

I absolutely agree..

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-07:52
What a crazy situation !

None are so blind as those who won’t see!

 By: Boron : July 17th, 2019-13:43
Or put another way… in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king!

Some initial thoughts...

 By: shortys home : July 17th, 2019-08:11
... I like the dial, and I agree that in a 40mm case with sapphire bezel it would be a killer watch 🙏 Given that a quite significant quantity is sold simply on the basis of photos and having tried the 38mm Bathyscaphe on my wrist, I suspect that some buye...

Not for me! Another brand that is heading into a wrong direction.

By: Pour le Mérite : July 17th, 2019-08:13
All this cash grabbing limited edition vintage crap, the lack of smaller sizes for both dress and sports watches. Sell out to one of the biggest influencers.

Super Nice...

 By: RG1 : July 17th, 2019-09:18
Thanks for sharing

indeed, this is a nice piece

 By: VinnieD : July 17th, 2019-09:22
Good size for me, nice colours, timeless design and good font. Kind of perfect if you ask me. Lots to like... apart from the price: this is an awful lot of cash for a steel 3-hander from a premium brand.

I agree but ...

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-09:39
you pays your money, you takes your choice

Actually the price is rather low for a modern Blancpain Fifty Fathoms variant

 By: reintitan : July 17th, 2019-11:06
as most are way over-priced. My FF Tribute to No Radiations was $16k MSRP brand new. (Thankfully, I didn't pay even remotely close to that when I got mine second-hand). The modern FF Mil-Spec is $14.5k or thereabouts. So under $10k is actually low for Bla...

I like it. I didn't buy one but they still might be available at the NY or Las Vegas Blancpain boutiques

 By: reintitan : July 17th, 2019-09:45
Hodinkee probably had 50% of the allocation with the rest split between those two boutiques. Goes to show again that the Swiss brands have their heads up their arses if they can't produce something as simple as a no-date dive watch. Doesn't mean they have...

You make some Interesting points [nt]

I just don’t understand the appeal of buying a watch branded by a purported blog/review site (which is actually a shill for certain manufacturers)

 By: descartes1 : July 17th, 2019-10:16
Not a fan of the fake patina either which to my taste works on only a handful of watches

I don’t like fake anything...

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-10:19
maybe just the one exception.

Or two. [nt]

 By: reintitan : July 17th, 2019-11:08

A pair ? [nt]

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-11:18

Two handfuls [nt]

 By: reintitan : July 17th, 2019-11:20

There’s a story (alas, apocryphal, but based on an actual experiment) where movie theatres displaying subliminal messages—“drink coke/eat popcorn”—immediately witnessed a bump in sales.

 By: ektaylor : July 17th, 2019-10:57
Maybe we should be checking Hodinkee’s HTML code for “no date” and “38 mm” interlaced with images/text. It’s practically their motto.

One already up for sale on ebay ...

 By: diracpoint : July 17th, 2019-11:01
for a cool $2099 profit. (I am not the seller, nor did I buy this watch ... just reporting. Mods, please remove if inappropriate) I agree with the above observation that 38 mm maybe a bit too small for this style of watch. Surprisingly, even 40mm seemed t...

It seems the bid is open until Sat ...

 By: diracpoint : July 17th, 2019-11:13
so that gives them a few days extra time.

I think you’re right.

 By: TheMadDruid : July 18th, 2019-10:40
Hodinkee has been done to a crisp here. Deservedly so.😏

I just must say, something is just weird with hodinkee lately....

 By: Izhik : July 17th, 2019-11:37
not the same web site as when I started to follow them....most articles seem to be driven by financial interests...now this LE BP, sold out before saying JR....as I said, just my personal impressions.....weird....

JR....

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-11:43
This one ? ...

aahhh....the good old Dallas days....they don't do anymore such great series...

 By: Izhik : July 17th, 2019-12:03
but, of course, I meant this one...as I guess you could imagine... ...

👍🏻 [nt]

 By: Izhik : July 17th, 2019-12:36

😉 [nt]

 By: Cpt Scarlet : July 17th, 2019-12:38

What an anticlimax

 By: Mostel : July 17th, 2019-14:24
$$9900?? Cough, choke!! Wow!! will there be regrets coming!! Oh, the pain. Not tomorrow or next few months, but OH when the hype passes... This is not a $9900 watch. Fake aged lume really surprises me! True collectors hate this detail. Embarrassed for Bla...

I for one think Blancpain nailed this..

 By: agyzace : July 17th, 2019-15:12
..let me explain why: - the watch is the lowest value FF/Bathyscaphe iteration, the 38mm - such an experiment already was conceded to Revolution watch a few years back and it was actually nicer, brown and all - the message to me - and I am a huge Blancpai...

100% agree 👍🏻 [nt]

 By: shortys home : July 17th, 2019-23:00

Thanks my friend [nt]

 By: agyzace : July 18th, 2019-04:04

The “win” for the watch manufacturers is as you say.

 By: Jay (Eire) : July 18th, 2019-00:28
Increased awareness among the masses. Clearly all of these brands who have participated with Hodinkee on these watches have identified an important and valuable marketing opportunity. On the reserve I’m sure Hodinkee now has enough data to be able to sell...

Fully agree with your comments Jay

 By: agyzace : July 18th, 2019-04:04
All the best, Alex

This is a great looking watch, and I’ve always believe that the Hodinkee collaborations are good for the brands.

 By: Jay (Eire) : July 18th, 2019-00:30
We make scoff at it, look at it as some kind of sell out or devaluing but it’s never that. It’s a very good marketing opportunity and Hodinkee know that and surely lever that in courting the brands for these collaborations.

Well said! [nt]

 By: FlyingSnoopy : July 18th, 2019-08:53

I’ll be a bit OCD here...

 By: mdg : July 17th, 2019-18:06
...the minute hand shouldn’t be where it is based on the second hand : ) Other than that it’s nice, if only for killing the date.

Wake me up when they're able to do something with Rolex..

 By: Echi : July 17th, 2019-20:03
On another note, these collab/LEs will backfire when done left and right. At the rate it's going, it's not something that one will look forward to with great anticipation. I'd probably go this route maybe once a year with a really well thought out product...

What a surprise 😈 [nt]

 By: shortys home : July 18th, 2019-00:25

Overrated

 By: cameraclock : July 18th, 2019-00:36
I was also online when it came up. So caught have bought. Decided was too pricey for not really anything special. Glad I saved the money. Would rather have the new ceramic black.

Just a thought

 By: marcobermann : July 18th, 2019-04:59
Seeing as Hodinkee is so proud to boast of its high quality readers how come their release is so US specific. I'm not saying I would of bought one but anyone from Europe would have to pay 20 % import duty on top of this price so I don't get why Blancpain ...

Here's a few live pics.

 By: Champthekid : July 18th, 2019-11:27
I love it, but I do see a lot of non-love here. That's OK with me. Hope you like the quick pics. Oh, I'm keeping it ...

Thank you, H. [nt]

 By: Champthekid : July 18th, 2019-11:45

No question it’s a nice looking watch.

 By: Jay (Eire) : July 18th, 2019-12:54
Very pleasing to my eyes at least.

Thanks, Jay. [nt]

 By: Champthekid : July 19th, 2019-01:52

Thanks, Izhik. [nt]

 By: Champthekid : July 19th, 2019-01:53

It's small, but not too small.

 By: Champthekid : July 19th, 2019-09:29
I hope you enjoy it

Congratulations! It looks very cool!

Hey, wanna try submitting a B&W pic of a Static and Wrist shot over at Wristscan? It might turn out to be winner 👌🏻👍🏻💪🏻

I will try, but I am terrible at converting/using photo software
