Rust on VW's ...
Don, i had a 1987 Jetta which i kept for 11 years and drove 290,000 hard kilometers ... the engine went dead because of the severe abuse. There was some rust but just a tiny bit; i even remember i once cut out a part of the inside of my wheel arches at the rear and i didn't really treated them well against rust .. so a few years later i checked them for rust but all i found was some surface-rust at the spots were i had used the cutting disc 
...
IMO VW's were FAR ahead of the French , Italian and even BMW or Mercedes those days .... when it came to rust-resistance that is !
On my current 2008 VW Transporter i have a blank spot of metal since 2010 ... and all i see are some tiny rusty spots, nothing to really worry about .. maybe time to do a little treatment ... .
FYI .. my grandfather bought his first Mercedes in the 60ies ...
I think it was a 190 ... built in Brussels ... they had to let it go after two years ... because the chassis was completely rusted out ...

The gearbox was one of the flaws, at that time.

Yep, a huge leap taken in the 80ies ...
.. but only VW and a few others took that leap ... The French and Italian waited until the 90ies i guess :-) ...
